Thread: Why do we lie to our kids about Santa?

Do you tell your daughter that Mickey Mouse is a fraud too? Yes thats a genuine question, and you have a good question as well, I could never really come up with a position on this one.

The reason we tell our children there is a Santa Claus, Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy, etc. is because it's fun for them, it's magical, it is one of the things that makes childhood fun! It's something that I still remember to this day, I think about how exciting christmas and easter was, now I cannot wait for them to pass.

Once we grow up and no longer believe in anything, life is pretty dull. That is why we go to movies and we allow ourselves to "suspend our disbelief" for two hours and enjoy the movie. Then we walk out feeling good, of course we realize it was "just a movie", and not real, but the two hours where we "believed it" it was fun.

I don't tell my children that. I have explained to my daughter that he is not real. I refuse to flat out lie to my kids. She still is just as excited as any other kid about Christmas.

She still talks about santa, and I don't discourage that...

It's not lying, it's more like creating a fantasy, there is a difference. And once they get to be about ten they figure it out.

and how in the world do you know that christmas is just as exciting/magical for her as the other kids? I can tell you from my own experience that once I knew that my parents were santa, christmas was never quite the same.

For most kids it exciting just to get gifts... With my daughter it's the same.

The fact that mom and dad give them to her vs. a fat guy in a red suite is nill.

I don't correct her or restate the fact every time Christmas comes around. She still talks about santa, but if she asks me I tell her the truth and she tells her mom what I said... It's more of a game discussing it with her.

I don't try to beat it into her. Or tell her santa is evil or anthing like that.

That feels like saying that going to Disneyland is no different once you tell your kids "this is just a corporate whore empire to suck money out of daddy, honey. Have fun on the teacups!"

I agree with Prince... let our kids live in their innocence as long as possible... the real world is so ugly.

I know when I was a kid my parents got fed up with my questions about Santa so they finally gave in and told me.
I kept asking them questions like "Why doesn't Santa give more to the homeless?" "How come Santa likes richer people better?"
They finally got stumped and caved in.

My grandparents drove Continentals, I didn't no they were tempted by Satan to buy them.

She's a child. I will protect her from things that could hurt her or cause her grief. Telling her santa is not real, is something all together different.

I honestly don't really see a right or a wrong answer to this... I just choose not to.

Not hardly. Disney is a place not a person. But I do agree with your take on disneyworld. Maybe one day when I'm rich I'll be able to take them.

Funny you should bring this up. Because she is deathly afraid of costumes I have had to tell her that Chuck E Cheese is really a man in a suit.

Alot of kids are scared of da Cheese.

We took my kids to a friends party at da Cheese and when the rat came out, it was like parting the red sea. I was LMAO as the rugrats scattered!

...I remember when I was 4 Lou as the Hulk scared the piss out of me every time the show came on I would sit watching it till he came on the screen then I would hide under the coffee table. Now look at me I'm trying to become that which I feared.

I am going to have to agree with Prince and Butterfly. Christmas is a magical time and the belief in Santa Claus just increases the joy and wonderment for our children. I feel a lot of the problems with today’s kids as that they loss their innocents so early. Why should I help take a way that innocents? If any one want to tell their kids that Santa is not real then that is their choice...just make sure your kids don't tell mine and ruin Christmas for them.

I dont really care either way...Parents can raise their kids how they want. The only thing bad I can really see about telling your kids at an early age that santa isn't real is that they may spread the word around school and ruin it for parents who wanted their kids to experience the "magical feeling".

THere are many at our church who do not do the Santa thing and this happens alot. Kids spoiling it for other kids. I disagree with them, but their thinking is that the kid may think that if the parents are lying about Christmas, maybe they are lying about other stuff. If Santa isn't real, Jesus may not be.

I say, let kids be kids and enjoy Santa. We don't do the Easter bunny and Tooth Fairy b/c they are quite frankly stupid.
