What do you think about posing at the gym?

When i workout, between sets while i catch my breath, i constantly flex and stretch the muscle(s) i'm working. If the mirror is in front of me, i'll hit a few poses to see how they're coming along.

Now, i have to say this up front, i really don't care what anyone thinks of me while i do this. I'm gonna do my 1st comp next summer (assuming i get big enough). Posing is practically as important as your physique, so i gotta start practicing as much as possible. But do people think this is weird?

Say i'm doing back, and b/w sets i stand there and do a lat spread in the mirror for a few seconds. Some people compliment me, some probably think "what an narcissistic asshole" and some probably have no clue what the f*ck i'm doing at all.

    What do you guys think?

...Keep in mind, i'm doing it strictly for my own good. In other words, i am sincerely not trying to "show off" one bit. i don't roll up my sleeves and flex my arms because they maybe bigger than the guy doing curls next to me. I do it strictly b/c i love the pump and i wanna see how i'm coming along.....

I understand your reasoning...but I can't stand people who do this But that is just me.

Even when I had to practice posing for my Figure comp- I did it at home.

Dont worry though- there are plenty of you guys out there

See, i wouldnt expect that answer from someone who competes themselves....

Why can you not stand people that do this? We lift weights to look either get bigger or more cut, thus we wanna see how we are progressing.
I do this for my own good (practicing posing), just like you lift weights so you look better and can do better in your comps......

I pose at the 2 months before a comp when I'm at the gym in between sets. I do this because my muscles are already burning which helps me condition and get rid of the shakes.

    I do this:
first & second round entrance. 3 poses hold 5 sec each.
stand off to the side for 15 second
Hit quarters and hold each for 15 sec

Third round all are holds for 30 seconds, except entrance

Fourth & fifth round all holds are 45 seconds, except entrance.

I do not care for people that do this either, even when I competed I did not stand and pose while I was working out.

See! That's what i'm talking about!

You understand where i'm coming from. I do it also to try to condition myself (get used to posing while fatigued and get rid of shakes)....

You have a comp in 4 weeks?

I'm not saying i stand there and pose Prince.

I merely hit a pose for a few seconds and that's it. I'm not trying to show off one bit, its for my own good you know....

At my gym, we usually cheer each other on and chant....Pose down...pose down.....

I would it gets annoying when people do it just to show off. As long as you don't care what others think, you're off to a good start.

Don't sweat it bro. Work hard and how off those eff's.

One thing I don't do, is stand in front of the mirror and guak (spelling, sorry) at myself.

I completely understand, maybe that is why I prefer to work-out in my home gym, cause I pose constantly at home in between sets. But when I am at my public gym I do not pose at all.

see, i think that's cool that you guys cheer eachother on. Unfortunately, im at a college gym now, where a) most kids have no clue what they're doing in the first place and b) they only care about getting big bi's and big chests, and know nothing about BB.

I don't care what others think. I'm in there for the same reason as everyone else, to accomplish a goal (which in my case is get bigger right now). I don't do it to show off.......but i don't see the difference of how you "like" when people cheer you on (which seems to me like its more "gauking" at yourself by trying to show other people what you got) and when i silently, non-chalantly hit a pose for a few seconds for my own good.....

You got the right idea Prince (home gym).

I'm in college now, and the gym f*ckin sucks, (always packed, too hot (management doesnt even allow the windows to be open!), no music, clowns that have no idea what they're doing....could go on and on), but i def make the best of it.

I love my gym at home. Mass monsters torturing themselves everywhere

It's a treat when i workout at home over winter break and summer vaca. I love the gym at home, but mabye in the future i can have my own "dungeon" in my basement (i can see it now, what a beautiful picture in my head)...poster everywhere (monster bb's...Arnold, Haney, Dorian, Ronnie, Sergio....), Pantera blasting in the background, and me killing myself

i competed once when i was in college and i used to flex (not pose 'cause i was sitting trying to look like i wasn't doing anything) like crazy during my classes. i know it made a difference the last couple of weeks.

at the gym i practiced my routine in the aerobics room and always dreaded when people would walk in and watch. crazy as it sounds that made me more nervous than getting on stage and doing it in front of a lot more people!

For me it's what you look like, if you are in good shape and hitting real poses I can probably figure out you are practicing for something, however there are these 2 guys at my gym who wear nothing but spandex and do alot more posing than lifting. The sad thing is they are about 150lbs with little definition standing right in front of you when you lift. Whatever the case I guess if it keeps you pumped and motivated who cares what other people think, just uh stay away from spandex shorts.

Odin-dont worry man, i dont rock spandex, i just don't wear a shirt to the gym (like Arnold and his buddies back in the day).

just kidding, but usually i have baggy ass shirts on, and you can't even tell i'm practising posing unless you know what that actually is.

i meant to quote you above......that's a great idea, constantly flexing in class, never thought of it. i don't pay attention anyways, so i guess its another way to make the time go faster (doing it very nonchalantly and subtly of course).

Although i suppose it'd be hilarious if i ripped my shirt off in the middle of a bigass lecture hall and did a back double biceps into a most muscular pose hahahaha

I didn't say I liked it when people cheer others on. I said we all chant,,,pose down, pose down. They don't do it to me because they know it embarrasses me and I'll stop and go in the back. I do it in front of people so I can get use to being critiqued. My trainer just before my first competition would have me go out in my posing suits occasionally and pose so I would get use to it. Do you think I liked doing that? HELL NO!!!! But, it helped me get over the "innocent girl" I am at the gym. I started not to care about what others thought of me at the gym. I was doing this for me and me only. If someone didn't like or didn't think I would make it, I took it as a challenge and kicked some ass. I worked harder, trained harder and practice my posing everyday. Anyway, when I"m in the gym posing currently I block everyone out. I try to imagine I'm the only one in the room so I can focus on my poses, etc... People respect me now at the gym. They wait until I'm done to add in their comments. They're not bad ones. Here's an example: "man, you really show off those calve muscles when you where your heels. Looking good, keep up the hard work. Looks like it's paying off" Those are the compliments I get. When we shout pose down, we mainly do it when the guys are preparing for a comp and they're hitting a pose. We get excited at our gym and support each other.

Like Oak said -- Don't worry about what other people think. Do this for you and don't worry about why others do posing in the gym. Care about yourself bud when it comes to this. For the most part. Enjoy it while you can and have fun with it.

If you like the home gym and your college is a little cliche for you. Then by all means purchase a home gym if it makes you feel comfortable. I have a set up in my home but I prefer working out at the gym.

i completely agree with you, and like i said (again), i don't care what others think.

you said you do it for yourself, which again i agree with, but why before did you say it "annoys" you or whatever. i think your exact words were when you see someone "gauking" at themselves in the mirror. It seems like you support it, but then it seems like you don't.....

I dont know, maybe I guess i'm just confused.

bottom line, like bodybuilding in general, i obviously do it, like everyone else does, for myself.

I said...it annoys me when people do it to show off! It's that simple. No where in my post did I say I annoy myself when I pose, nor did I say I show off when I'm posing.

If posing is done inside the gym to draw attention to yourself and to flatter you're own eago (spelling) then it's annoying.

I never break out with poses in the gym for a few reasons, mainly that my gym is not the kind of gym that you can do this at, it isn't a lifters gym so I don't even bother worrying about that shit. I personally do not like people posing in the gym, just my opinion, I think that it is narcisisstic no matter what the reason is. I practice posing for hrs at my house where I can fully concentrate and not have people muggin me. I think it is great to keep teh muscles tensed and flexed, but to full on pose, why is it necessary with other people around. It is all a matter of opinion, the main reason I don't liker it is b/c I never see true lifters doing it, I only see chumps in the gym posing. I like to wear big unrevealing clothes, I am not there to stare at myself, I am there to focus 100% on my task at hand, it would be distractin for me to pause and start posing. Its all good though. If your get big enough flex you can do whatever you want

Why can you not stand people that do this? We lift weights to look either get bigger or more cut, thus we wanna see how we are progressing.
I do this for my own good (practicing posing), just like you lift weights so you look better and can do better in your comps......
Plain and simple, there is a time and place for everything. during a workout is not the time to be staring at yourself in the mirror. I also could not stand guys that did that regardless of how big there were. If they were skinny ass dudes I thought they were dicks. If they were monsters I thought they were in love with themselves or showing off and dicks.

It's like anything else. You complete the entire workout, leave the gym area and If you belong to a really good gym as I did they had an aerobic room or a posing room for that stuff. We actually had a posing room with proper lighting in my gym because it was a bodybuilder gym. Several pros came out of there. I never EVER saw Rich Gaspari or the other low level pro do that crap.

Oh I just thought of a single and I say a "single" incident when I sort of posed in the gym. I was wearing full length workout pants, a couple guys I train with, one was Rich Gaspari were goofing around "after" a Leg workout and kept asking to see my legs so for the goof I dropped my pants and started flexing one of my legs. I was in my underwear and pants around my ankles flexing. Everyone in eye shot were laughing their asses off expecially when I was showing them my ass striations by pulling my underwear up like I was wearing a thong. All for a laugh.

I look in the mirror sometimes between sets while resting, but not much of a habit for me. I do look at my back at home about twice a week though and whatever new delt/trap definition I may have.
