Thread: Dog help....Choosing one

Well you have a great list, as I'm sure you know, GSD's will shed, and most of the dogs you mentioned will be very protective, you will also need to see if your homeowner's insurance will cover your dog, depending on what type, especially rotties, dobies, and pitties...........I personally love all that you mentioned, but rotties are what I will get next when my 19 yr. old cat passes on, good luck and have fun, animals are great..........

I have a doberman and have had him for 11 years now. Great dog and will follow the "woman" of the house (mine does anyway). Sweet dog, love 'em. 2 of my friends have boxers and both dogs have "loud" personalities (not noisy, just nuts). My dog hardly sheds and neither do the 2 boxers!

I have raised Boxers for 5 years now. Excellant dogs. Great with kids. Very personable, caring, loving gentle, HYPER HYPER HYPER, great frisby dogs, don't shed hardly. Not very protective. Depends on how you raise them. Mine were all TOO TOO nice. Not protective. They loved everyone they saw. VERY tolerant. Good natured. Gorgeous dogs. Easy to train. I've trained mine to where they know when to calm down. They also get jealous of other dogs. Not fight jealous..just.....hey..pet me tooo.....hey....don't forget about me. Here's an example. Say I bring two of my boxers inside. One is eating food and the other sitting at my side. Once the one eating notices that I'm petting or giving some sort of attention to the other, BOOM, right there...just looking at me....or stepping on my toes or wagging their nubs. I cannot stress how great these dogs are. And, easy to sell if something goes wrong.

German Sheps are also good dogs. They are both great with people and are protective by nature. Again, they're manners are retained by their up bringing.

American PitBulls -- Would not suggest them PERIOD. Especially if you have children. Katie is correct when she talks about having special insurance on them. Any dog that has lock jaw requires insurance for that purpose.

My uncle raises Great Danes. Their tales are excellant for whips. Great animal. Drouls (spelling) a lot. Eats a lot. Good with kids. Also playful.

Rotts -- Well I believe everyone has their opinion on them. My uncle use to raise them. VERY PROTECTIVE OF THEIR SURROUNDINGS. You have to keep reminding them who's the boss in the house. They also eat a lot and droul. Good dogs if brought up right.

Mastiff....Wouldn't get. You'll have more money in vet bills than you would in the cost of the purchase and dog food. They have joint problems. Beautiful dogs!! Just have to be cautious with them and not run them.

Doberman.....I don't know anything about.

I've had a few dogs in my life. Now i have a shar pei "elmo".
He is a very wrinkled dog with a great personality.
He likes sleeping alot and for the first year and a half he snored.
Not very energetic except for the puppy fit.

I'll try posting a few pics later on today as it is 09.10 over here and should have left 10 minutes ago.

Same day.

first Christmas.

In the first photos he is only about 6 kg. In the christmas photo he is 23-25kg and today he is 30 but he has lost some of the wrinkles.
Let us know when you make up your mind.

By the way i hate cats!

I love labs of any color. Very gentle when mature and extremely smart. They shed like crazy though.

Get yourself a Tosa

Nothing beats MY baby!! She is a cockapoo, 4 generation. N0 shedding, very little barking, very affectionate and loving, NEVER destroyed anything. She rings a hotel belle when she needs to go out.... learned THAT in 2 days.. and so cute people stop me on the street to tell me so... her name is Belle

My dad got a dog last year and it's a cross between a border colie and a rottie. Damn is that dog ever smart, he can be left outside all day and not go off the yard, he chases away bears when hiking, never once pissed in the house. I've heard the border collies are the smartest dog, I kinda believe it now.

I can't suggest you my dogs 'cus they shed like mad ( 1 Collie,1 mix of German Sheperd/Bouvier/Newfy and an offspring of those two,YUP a mutt...)Great characters,they love attention,poked in the eyes,ears pulled by kids is like love for them,and I can play rough with them!!!BIG DAWGS!!!!

WOW is this photoshopped or is this dog really THAT BIG?! its a American pit bull terrior... maybe the dog is closer to the camera than the guy? dog looks like a beast!

I had a lab and they are a good dog to have if you are looking for a companion, she is totally a big geek but she loves the family to death. She certainly isn't going to stop someone breaking into your house, very submissive. In fact she is kindof like the homer simpson of dogs if you will. I personally would rather have a pit, much more of a specimen, all muscular and mean tempered. hell ya.

Since you are in a 3 room house and didn't mention whether or not you have a yard for the dog, I would recommend a rottie because they are basically lazy dogs that prefer to lay about all day. My next dog will be a rottie. But they are BIG and do shed.

I have a lab mix and a golden retriever. Labs are great, but they are HYPER, HYPER, HYPER. Mine will be 7 in January and she hasn't mellowed one little bit. The retriever is the best family dog because there isn't an aggressive bone in their bodies. My kids sit on top of him, chase him around, pull sticks out of his mouth, and he love all of the attention. And he is big enough, 78 pounds, to take all of the abuse. Smaller dogs tend to be a bit fragile and don't live as long on average.

All dogs are good if they are raised with care and love, except pit bulls.
