Free and even commercial software will pretty unanimously have a disclaimer. When you change things deep in the registry especially, they will warn you - although nowdays there are 5 copies of the registry backed up and restoring is much more automatic than it was with Win95b.

There is some cool freeware out there. Most of the good stuff does not have that spyware crap, if you are worried about that run AdAware or etc.
Most of the good freeware is just stuff written by geeks, not out to make a buck off of you.
