    Greatest President ever?

A lot of people agree that it was JFK. But many also say that it was Ronald Reagan. There are proposals to put his face on the Dime as well as Mt. Rushmore. Your opinion?

Ronald Reagan can take credit for ending the cold war. He had his problems too though. I don't think JFK was around long enough to make much of a difference.

RR was THE man, but GWB may make a run at him.

The best recent president was Regan. He turned around the US economy and changed the world with his foreign policy.

The best president ever is hard to determine.
Washington was the first president, he started the US down the right path, and he declined to serve more than 2 terms.
Jefferson wrote much of the govermental policies and expanded the country.
Lincoln re-unitied the country with the civil war. (He loses points because the emancipation proclamation only freed slaves in the confederate states)
FDR guided the US thru WW2 (although he loses points for his new deal programs, WW2 is what brought us out of the great depression).
Regan ended the Carter ression and brought down the Soviet Union.

Out of the recent presidents, Reagan is clearly the best.

He was not the sharpest of men, but a fantastic leader and that is what we needed. The Republican party has essentially been without a good leader since.

Bill Clinton was the opposite of RR. Very bright, no guiding convictions, just talk talk talk.

I think I may disagree with that. I have heard the stories and in that "area" you may be correct. However, if all Democrats were like JFK we'd be in better shape.

Too bad John Wayne didn't live to run for president!
If his health was better, Charleton Heston would be a good leader.

Yes, I'm a Rebulican but I really liked Jimmy Carter.

-he created the Department of Education
-appointed record numbers of women, blacks, and Hispanics to Government jobs
-he negotiated with Iran for the release of the 52 hostages during the last 14 months in office only to get a slap in the face when the hostages were released not 30mins after Reagan was sworn in.

I'm not trying to say I think Jimmy Carter was the greatest President ever... I just don't think he gets enough credit for the good things he did accomplish.

I also happen to like both Bush's, but I wouldn't neccesarily want to see their heads on my money.

Now Arnold's bod would be nice to see on the dollar bill

    I second Carter.
He promoted alternative energy after the energy crisis in the 70's. He was the first to put solar panels on the whitehouse. Reagan had them torn down when he took office, why cause it didn't look good to the oil companies. Bush2 put them back, but only after he was told water heated by solar energy would boost his sex life. My company provided those

If Carter did anything good it was kept a secret. What I remember was home interest rates in the 16 to 18% range and people in lines to get gasoline. The hostages in Iran would never have been released if he had won a second term. Iran knew he had no guts. When Reagan won, they released them right away. They knew Reagan would come in with guns blazing. You can't deal with terrorist.
If he were in fact a decent man, he would keep his mouth shut and just build homes for the homeless and quit trying to act like he knows anything about what is good for the USA.
He and Bill Clintoon are cut from the same cloth.

But let me give you my 10 solid reasons why Carter merited the honor nonetheless. I'll walk you through them, one-by-one.

Reason No. 10: When Carter was elected president in '76, inflation (measured by the Consumer Price Index) stood at under 5%. Four years later, inflation soared to double-digits -- over 12%.

Er, how does that make Carter worthy of the Nobel Peace Prize?

Answer coming up -- stay with me.

Reason No. 9: Under Carter, interest rates rocketed to 22%, devastating the housing market, capital goods industries, depressing consumer sales across-the-board.

Reason No. 8: Carter gave us the longest unemployment lines in four decades. By '80, the unemployment rate stood a shade under 8%, well on its way towards double-digits, too.

Reason No. 7: Jimmy Carter gave us the Misery Index -- remember that thing? The index is the sum of inflation and unemployment. When Carter took office, the index stood at 13.5. Four years later, the country was staggering under misery indexes well over 20.

Reason No. 6: Under Carter, median family income fell dramatically.

Reason No. 5: Under Carter, the standard of living fell dramatically.

Reason No. 4: Remember those long gas lines common circa late 70s? Another Carter achievement. As candidate, Jimmy 'I-will-never-lie-to-you' Carter promised no more high gas prices. Then came 1979 and $1+ gas. A phony "Energy Crisis" resulted.

Reason No. 3: Carter, human rights champion, drove U.S. ally Mohammed Reza Pahlevi -- the Shah of Iran -- from power in 1979, making Iran the headquarters of global radical Islamic fundamentalism and among the world's chief sponsors of terrorism.

Reason No. 2: In 1979, Carter drove the pro-U.S. government of Anastasio Somoza in Nicaraqua from power, another brilliant stroke for human rights. A 10-year reign of terror followed, under the brutal and corrupt communist Ortega brothers.

Which brings us to Reason No. 1 on why I think Jimmy Carter more than earned the Nobel Peace Prize ...

    Drum roll, please?

Here it is, Reason No. 1: The Carter disaster paved the way for ... President Ronald Wilson Reagan, America's 40th!

It's real simple: Without Carter, America might not have had Reagan, who brought down the Iron Curtain and ended the Cold War without firing a shot!

It's called 'Peace Through Strength', the Gipper's motto. It led to the end of the Soviet Union -- the greatest threat to world peace in the latter half of the 20th Century.

If Reagan was the Great Communicator, Carter was the Great Ex-Communicator. Jimmy drove millions of voters out of the Democrat party to cast their ballots proudly for Reagan.

Well, there you have it, folks.

    So Thank You, Jimmy!

That's funny...I kept saying during the Clinton administration "just remember, without Carter, we don't get Reagan."

Some truth to that, Clinton's antics help Gore lose. Can you imagine dealing with 9/11 with Gore and his buddies?

His domestic strategies were hampered by runaway inflation and an uncooperative Congress that couldn't come to agreement with him on energy conservation and alternate energy research policies.

In foreign affairs, however, Carter is credited with helping to bring about peace between Egypt and Israel.

Making a treaty to give Panama control of the Panama Canal,

Reaching an arms control agreement with the Soviets (SALT II, which was never ratified),

And securing the release of the U.S. hostages from the embassy in Teheran, Iran.

Carter also attempted an overhaul of the tax system, but Congress rejected the idea in favor of tax cuts.

Carter's popularity was hampered throughout 1980 because of the difficulty in ending the hostage crisis in Iran. It was also hampered because the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan led him to reinstate draft registration, boycott the summer Olympics in Moscow, and cut domestic spending in favor of military spending.

Since leaving the presidency, Carter has continued the work that stood out during his presidency, acting as a mediator to help bring about peaceful settlements to disputes throughout the world.

Don't you realise everything revolves around energy these day's?
The biggest names in the news all have something to do with energy, Enron, Halliburton, Lyondell, Exxon/Mobil, etc. Why do we care about the most barren god foresaken countries on the planet? Cause they have sand? I think not. If Carter could have begun and we had continued to move towards alternative energy we probably would never have had 9/11 because the middle east would never have been an issue to us by the 90's and they would have no beef with us. Yet Reagan set us back as did Bush1 by stiff arming research and subsidies for alternate energy companies.

You know, if you are going to mouth off with that much attitude, you should know some history. Iran freed the hostages at least in part to fear of the incoming administration. To say that Carter had the release worked out is laughable.

    Go do your homework.
