    Should we legalize illegal aliens?

    Tom Ridge thinks we should.
    ----------------------------------------------
The United States should legalize millions of illegal immigrants living in the country, said Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge in a speech in Miami yesterday.

    Tom Ridge

"The bottom line is, as a country we have to come to grips with the presence of 8 to 12 million illegals, afford them some kind of legal status some way, but also as a country decide what our immigration policy is and then enforce it," Ridge said, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

Ridge was speaking at a town hall meeting at Miami-Dade Community College, the second forum in a national series organized by the nonprofit Council for Excellence in Government.

The group is seeking to develop homeland security recommendations for various levels of government and the public, the Florida paper said.

Responding to a question from the audience of about 300, Ridge said he thinks a consensus is building that it is time to address the situation of illegal immigrants, who, he said, contribute to the country and pay taxes.

A growing number of bills would give residency to some of those people he said, adding one that requires them to leave the country before applying for legal status is "not workable."

"I'm not saying make them citizens, because they violated the law to get here," he said, according to the Sun-Sentinel. "So you don't reward that type of conduct by turning over a citizenship certificate. You determine how you can legalize their presence, then, as a country, you make a decision that from this day forward, from this day forward, this is the process of entry, and if you violate that process of entry we have the resources to cope with it."

Ridge praised Florida Gov. Jeb Bush for the state's investment in homeland security, amounting to $403 million this year. Most of those funds comes from the $29.4 billion allotted by the federal government for domestic security.

Bush told a national security advisory council yesterday, "In the event of a disaster, a terrorist attack of any kind, ... today we are better trained, better equipped, better coordinated," the Sun-Sentinel reported.

The paper said the town hall audience was asked if they felt safer than they did a year ago. Fifty-two percent answered yes, 28 percent said no, and 20 percent said they felt the same.

I thought we had a legalized process of entry... and that illegal aliens by definition had not followed it. Whats the problem then?

Well, the problem is that it is not possible to round up the number we have, and it would create a world wide backlash against the US as being inhumane, etc.

After which some people would probably try and say that Bush had attempted to have the illegal aliens work the oil fields and they wouldnt so he kicked them out

Ridge knows he has no way of getting a handle on the illegal aliens. The only way to account for them all is by making them legal so they go give their names to the government. Which isnt necessarily a bad idea. I do hope they can figure out a way to keep it from happening in the future though, as there is plenty of labor in the US these days to perform the jobs that need to be done. Any more will create a favorable environment for business owners, drive down salaries and put a hurting on the working man. Thats what an overly competitive job market due to this problem would be like IMO at least.

There in lies the problem. Why should we care? Come in legally or go home. IMNSHO

Because we are in no way capable of capturing them. Then what, how about those that might rather die than go back to Mexico (or something). How many cops/INS agents would die trying to round up 8 -12 million people? People arent just going to say "Oh, okay, time for us to leave, lets go guys!"

Then the problem exists, what do we do with their children who were born/raised in the US? Do we throw them out too? Even though they were born here?

Lastly, we have to care because if not then you have people freaking out left and right about what we are doing. Its obvious you arent into politics, but dont you think we have a tough enough time as it is in the world without giving countries like France, Germany and Russia more ammunition? I say we cant afford to. Any person dealing in PR would agree on that issue I'd think, and probably anybody that has a job interacting with people would understand the ramifications. The world calls us the bad guys as is. If Bush had that many Aliens thrown out, they'd lynch him like he was a new Hitler.

well... if we made it legal then they wouldn't really be illegal aliens anymore... so then the law would affect all of the illegal people, which there are none of... so you'd have a law protecting a nonexistant people, but if you got rid of the law you'd make these imaginary people exist, so in turn you'd be creating a paradox void of time and space and we would all cease to exist... GREAT JOB TGS YOU JUST DESTROYED THE PLANET ASSHOLE!

No, I do follow politics and this is a much too big a problem. If we had never started the handouts, they wouldn't want to be here as much as they do. They are bankrupting the border states with health care costs. They know when they cross the border and have a child(you and I pay for it), it is automatically a citizen. They know before they get here where to go for what they need. The ones that are already here call them on their cell phones and give them all the details. Our borders both north and south are too wide open as it is now. If we don't close them to ilegals, we may as well raise our tax bracket to the 90% range it was in the 50's. Because it will take that and some. I have nothing against any of them personally. I know from the ones around this area, they work harder than anyone I know, be it in school or on the job. If the companies that hire them were required to pay them a living wage and benefits, they wouldn't have a job to walk into as soon as they crossed the border either.
