    All MP3 Downloaders Read This!

Got a call from a client today, a lawyer with at 14 year old daughter. His daughter was downloading songs and the music industry representatives traced her IP address, contact Charter Cable for her home address and tagged her (well, her father really) with a $4,000 fine.

He scratched a check this afternoon. Merry Christmas, huh?

    Beware, the threats are real!

Here's what we think we know, she was busted because she left the program open after downloading songs so her computer was uploading tunes. This got the attention of the cyper cops.

From what I hear they get on your ass if you’re sharing a large quantity of files, I think it’s like 100+. If you don’t share so many files I don’t think they are going to waste their time. They want the big guys to set an example.

Well, this girl had 700 songs and was leaving the program open b/c she was using the built-in player to listen to the songs.

Get this though, they never touched her computer, they got the number of downloads from Kazaa. So it seems to me to be worthwhile to change accounts every so often. But I guess they could do their download count by IP address...why would Kazaa keep such records?

one thing some people fail to grasp....

this is stealing plain and simple. you don't have a "right" to take the music.
the stealing is destroying the music industry.
that WILL impact you if you love music b/c labels can no longer spend the money necessary to break new artists/bands. (that means you won't get to hear 'em)

OK, I can't really argue with that but I have no sympathy for the recording lables. CD prices have been outrageous. In a way, they brought this on themselves.

I do download music but I have made purchases b/c I liked what I downloaded. For some artists, I have spent MORE money on CDs b/c of file sharing.

I am not saying it's right, but I also don't think it is right to tag a 14 year old with a $4,000 fine either.

universal has dropped prices hugely so if retail drops them to consumers we should be seeing cds priced around $11 instead of $20 as the norm. (remains to be seen if others will follow suit)

i do agree that a $20 bill for a cd is craziness

but people will spend that to buy a book or a movie and the times you can listen to a cd will probably far outnumber the times you'd read a book...

but i do agree that the prices got crazy and fining a 14 year old doesn't seem like the right thing to do....(yet not sure what they can do to truly stop the illegal downloads. most people won't stop just b/c it isn't morally right, ya know?)

No shiat she got the screwed.

By the way, I though they only get on you if you’re sharing files. You can download as many as you please. As long as you don’t share too many of them, no allowing others to download them from you, you’ll be fine. I’m I right or not?

He prolly meant P2P. Any way, when you get a song of Kazaa or any other like WinmX or Blubster, after you down load the song, just create a new folder on your desktop and drag what ever song, videos to that new file and your share folder will be empty. You can also click disable share folder for these progs too but it is better to just drag out to your own folder.

Stuff you might want to know but don't have to for file-sharing.
Just delete the exe from kazaa by deleting to recycle bin and then drag from recycle bin to folder into my docs so it still works. This eliminates shortcut so prog still works.

Actually Kazaa is really screwing with the people becuase they CHARGE to download songs. I would think if a person paid the fee, they would assume there are no legal risks invovled.

I had Kazaa and it kept messing up my puiter bigtime, so I dumped it. I am not a theif but I owuld nevr spend $20 for a cd tat has maybe only 2 songs worth listening to.

I just wonder if they are only putting fines on people in the US? How would they prosecute someone in another country? And what would happen if you went to court and fought it. I still say if you have bought a cd, you can share it with anyone you wish. I have probably 2500 songs on my computer(15g) and probably 85% of the songs I have the cd's. When I downlaod songs, I do move it into another drive and take it off my C: drive. I actually had a note on mine pop up one time saying it looked like I was sharing. I quickly deleted it without reading it all and shut down Kazaa. Haven't heard anything since?
