    Computer help needed from gamers

    Hey folks,

I just acquired Halo for my PC and I'm dying to play it, however apparantly my display does not support Directx 9.0b which is what they use to run the game.

I'm running with an S3 ProSavageDDR (420, 430) right now, and it says that I need to update my driver to be able to run this version of Directx, which is where I get stumped. The ProSavage website wasn't much help because I don't know which driver to download.

I shtere an easy place to find the driver that I need? I'm worried I need to get a whole new graphics card, which would really suck. I'm dying to play this game. Can I download a Radeon video driver even though it isn't the same as my graphics card? Help!
Today I can do what others will not so that tomorrow I will do what others cannot.

The difference between winners and losers is that winners do things that losers don't want to do.

Most of the S3 cards are embedded video on the motherboard, which would imply you have a "crappy" setup for gaming.

Not sure why you dont know which driver to download, drivers dont include DirectX normally as that comes from Microslop.

    http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

Some games may not RUN without a hardware accelerated DX9 card, which S3 is most CERTAINLY not. My own video card at home is DX8 hardware accelerated, not DX9, and it will blow probably any S3 out of the water as they are not gamers cards last I checked.

nVidia or ATi are still on top.

Got get a new video card man. Personally I'm an ATI fan, never had trouble with them. Currently I'm using one of their Radeon 9600 pro and have had no trouble with any of the newer games.

There is a GeForce 4 MX420, is that what you have perhaps? Definitely not hardware DX9 but may be able to play Halo decently at lower resolution.

DX9 is more a set of APIs from MS than a 'driver' per se, often though these days the newer games will offer to install DX if it is needed.

Isn’t S3 ProSavage DDR onboard video? Pretty much all onboard video that I know of are crap for games. Get a separate video card and you’ll have no more trouble until there are new standards for games. By then you’ll probably want a new computer anyway.

Every modern S3 that I know of is on-board aka CRAP on a stick, which would furthre imply the CPU is slow and the motherboard itself is probably pretty slow too (yes motherboards and chipset affect performance).

Being a gamer can be expensive. When I buy new video cards though they are usually $80-$100, that lasts me a year or so. I am still playing on a somewhat overclocked (and big ass heatsink) GeForce 3 Ti200.

Crap. I think I'm screwed because this is definitely an S3 card...guess I'll wait on it because I can't justify paying $110 just to play a game.

Thanks for all of your help guys!

I haven't been to www.tomshardware.com in awhile but if you search for some benchmarks there, you may find a $70 card that fits the bill acceptably.

CPU is still needed to work most of the math behind the game however, so a fast video card and slow CPU wont work terribly well either.

I have a 1.53GHz (Athlon 1800+) machine with what is now a $60 video card (GF3 Ti200) and I can play pretty much anything (Raven Shield anyway) at 1024x768 if not greater, but Halo I have not tried.

    http://www.pricewatch.com/

    * Onboard DDR is not as fast as dedicated video DDR also

    9700 pro? You lucky sob. I'm running a GeForce 4 4200 128 MB.

I would not even try running Halo on a TNT. I would just go and spend a good $70+ on a fairly good video card and get all that out of the way.

I replaced my GF2 MX (the orignal MX) with my Ti200, I would not bother with a TnT 2 either. I had a TnT 16MB before that, and a Voodoo 2 before that, and before that an ATi XPert@Play 8MB when ATi sucked royally, no hardware acceleration for OpenGL applications (Quake2).

Before that, Matrox Millenium (?) 2MB, before that a Spider Graphics VLB 1MB on a 486 SLC2, thats as far back as I can go.

My current card has 64MB and really I wish I had a hotter card, but I am trying to wait until Doom 3 hits. I have a 19" monitor and I love high res since I play realistic shooters, resolution and consistent FPS really helps avoid getting shot.

Just locate the appropriate S3 video chipset number to isolate the correct driver based on that chipset. Then just search for it on the net, you should find several. Take the latest and read the release notes. Make sure it provides support for direct x 9.
If it does not, and this is a game requirement just upgrade to a video card that supports it. I got my geforce 4 for like 50 bucks.
You don't need the latest and greatest generally to run most of the good games. They are nice to have, but also cost 3-400 bucks. It sounds like your trying to budget so hopefully the latest driver for your current S3 will support direct X 9..

I saw a place where you can download Doom 3. I’m downloading right now see if it is actually the full version. I’ll let you know where when I confirm is the full version.

Yeah people I will go and actually buy it when it comes out but it’s not yet out so……

Its what I do to buy food and crap

Any embedded video will not hardware support DX9, if the game absolutely requires that then you are out of luck, although MOST games will compromise otherwise obviously they alienate people by forced upgrades which means lost sales.

I have seen the Doom 3 leaked internal test that was over a year ago though, but I have heard something twice the size (600MB?) was on KaZaA. The leaked test ran about 2 FPS on a friends computer.

Find the motherboard maker and what mobo it is (you can crack open the case, or at bootup copy the string of ~14 numbers and letters on the bottom left), punch the crap into Google and find the site. Then from there they should sort out the drivers plain as day, for sound, video, any chipset support updates, etc On the mobo it will probably have a 4/5 digit model number like ST-420 or something like that, usually in some larger white paint so its somewhat noticeable.

If you need to copy the stuff at bootup, hit the PAUSE key once, hit ENTER to continue POST/bootup

If it were an MSI motherboard:
    http://www.msicomputer.com/

Most of the time it is just company.com or company.com.tw (Asus, etc)

The one I got it’s not from Kazaa, the download is 1.21GB when extracted with something like winrar. Now let me see how this works.

    Ponyboy,

Before cracking the case open to identify your video chipset,
first try using S3 video chipset locator software..... In many cases it makes it much easier to identify the chipset this way for many of the S3 onboard video cards....

The utility is available here on S3's website. >
