    Target and Veterans

Recently we asked the local TARGET store to be a proud sponsor of the
Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall during our spring recognition event.

We received the following reply from the local TARGET management:
"Veterans do not meet our area of giving. We only donate to the arts,
social action groups, gay &lesbian causes, and education."

So I'm thinking, if the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall and veterans
in general do not meet their donation criteria, then something is really
wrong at this TARGET store. We were not asking for thousands of
dollars, not even hundreds, just a small sponsorship for a memorial
    remembrance.

    As a follow-up, I e-mailed the TARGET U.S. corporate headquarters
and their response was the same. That's their national policy.

Then I looked into the company further. They will not allow the
Marines to collect for 'Toys for Tots' at any of their stores. And during
the recent Iraq deployment, they would not allow families of employees
who were called up for active duty to continue their insurance coverage
while they were on military service. Then as I dig further, TARGET is a
    French-owned corporation.

Now, I'm thinking again. If TARGET can not support American Veterans,
then why should I and my family support their stores by spending our
hard earned American dollars and to have their profits sent to France.
Without the American Vets, where would France be today?

Feel free to pass this along to whomever you want.

    Sincerely,
    Dick Forrey

I recieved that in an e-mail about a month ago. I forward it to Target and asked what was up. They replied with a list of 20 or 25 Vets organizations they give to. They said the person who started that was asking for support for a group they did not feel took the Vets interest into account. They declined to give and he started a campain of e-mails like that.

Now whether Target or the person who started that e-mail is lying, I can't say. But the list Target provided impressed me.

I doubt Target would lie about such a thing, but for a smaller organization to do so I would not be so supprised.

Goes to show how easily and how fast bad information can travel, especially with the interweb.

I agree with you guys. It would be foolish for Target, or any other company for that matter, to send out the kind of letter Dick Forrey claims to have received in that post. For one thing, why would ANY company make a point of stating "Veterans do not meet our area of giving. We only donate to the arts, social action groups, gay and lesbian causes, and education," as part of an explanation for turning down a request for a donation? I can almost see a lower management person at a local store respond in that manner, but I can't imagine a corporate headquarters being flippant enough about their public image to issue that kind of response statement as a matter of policy.

Perhaps this is a local organization that isn't very well known, and for some reason Mr. Forrey was unable to effectively convince Target of the nature of his project. It just seems to me that corporate America has been learning to be very careful about what they sponsor - too many political groups on both the left and the right threaten to boycott if a company gives a buck to any one side. No large company that depends on marketing to a mass public would intend to deliberately alienate a large segment of that same public by issuing that kind of statement.
