That is a shitload of extra fuel and rockets they'll need to lug to Mars, successful land it on the surface, and get it ready for relaunch from Mars' surface.
NASA could easily build a craft that would carry humans to and from Mars. That's not the problem. The problem lies with the muscle and bone deterioration that occurs in zero gravity. Aside from having the astronauts exercise 12 hours a day, we haven't solved that problem yet and we would never send someone out there and back only to have them be a vegetable when they get back to Earth.

science is interesting, isn't it.

Well NASA must be working on that since GWB has aspirations of sending manned explorations there. I would expect that NASA had been working on it, anyway.Originally posted by butterfly

I am glad to see we're going to send more men to the moon, but damn, 2018 is a long time away.![]()
If you want to know the truth GWB hasn't exactly been our biggest supporter. Huge shock to us since he's from Texas and all. It wasn't until the Columbia disaster that he publicly showed support for the space program.Originally posted by I Are Baboon

2018 seems far away but consider all we need to get done before we can go again... specifically a newly designed shuttle.

Seems to me that GWB has been focusing on international problems and homeland security too much to care about the space program. The Columbia disaster was a huge PR mess for NASA, which is why he got involved. (all my opinion, of course).Originally posted by butterfly

I would imagine a manned Mars mission would be worked on concurrently with a moon mission, so we won't have to wait 30-40 years for a Mars mission to see liftoff.

I think Butterfly's point is that it'd be a waste of money to try to bring an unmanned ship back to Earth. It's cheaper to leave it there.Originally posted by Mudge

The pictures you see of Mars are actually a number of pictures combined. This might be one of the reasons for the delayed release of pictures. Also, it would be very embarrasing for someone else to find something of interest in a picture we post before we do.( I work for JPL)
