    Bad PT's

Have to rant here. Now, most PT's I know and the ones here are great. I saw this on PT @ my gym the other night was so horrible, it distracted my workout.
This woman was a disgrace to the profession.
I was in between sets and saw a flurry of activity that grabbed my attemtion.
I looked over and saw this PT had her client doing cybex cable seated rows. Or..supposeedly. You should have seen how bad this girl was doing it. Completely wrong. Too fast. Bad form, it just goes on....
What was the PT doing during this? Nothing. Not even looking at her client. This happened thruout this girl's workout. (now that my attention was drawn to this spectacle, I was watching to see what she would do next)
I felt bad for the client. She is probably paying good $$ to have her time wasted.
I wanted to either go to the PT, and say: YOU suck, you need to learn your trade and participate in your client's training,
    or tell the client:
If I were you, I'd fire this person, request a knowlagable PT, read books, watch other people, ask questions..join a great on-line forum....

I felt bad that this poor girl who wanted to join the gym and make positive changes is getting off to a bad start, becsues the PT she got put with...SUCKS!
    There's my rant.

yup, very unfortunate and difficult to witness!

unfortunately the personal training industry lacks any real structure, meaning you do not have to posses a state license. There needs to be some type of responsiblity put in place, PT's need to pass a state certified test or something along those lines so clients at least know that they went thru proper training and testing to be in the profession.

We had some really good, kowlegable PTs that worked in the gym, but the gym, World's Gym, and them had some falling out, adn they all went else where..and the poor newbies are stuck with....
Damn, I should go get my license...I can do better than the two PT's I saw the other night....

The problem is not only with the industry, it is also on the clients and business' running the show. People will hire a trainer based on their looks. When I worked at Bally's (No laughing) I was never asked to see my credentials. Since Bally's does not require you to be certified, there were a few people there who didn't have the slightest idea how to train someone. Also, I know people who have the ACE certification that have no idea what they are doing, and this is considered a reputable certification. Personally, if I am going to pay someone $50+/hr, I am going to be damn usre they no what they are doing and are not just reciting me answers from a book.

Also, there is no requirement to keep up to date on things. Sure, some certs require you to take CEUs, but you can take a CEU on anything even remotely relevant to fitness and get credit. I think all this stuff needs to be centralized to one Private entity and PTs required to conform.
If sense were common, everyone would have it.

well, to an extint, the PT's body is their 'business card'.
I'll be honest, I'd be more willing to hire an PT that was fit and in-shape then one that was chunky.
I'd also be interviewing the PT....as in the case I stated, I do notthink the girl had nay clue what was going on, so she did not know what to do / ask...

Exactly, that is why it needs structure, some type of state license program to oversee it.

And all gyms and clubs need to be required to adhere to some type of state written rules stating that a PT must have a valid state license to work in their club, just like any other professional field, i.e. registered dietician.

Some gyms/clubs require certification but there are numerous certifications out there and no one is oveseeing them, and as you said it's just about money, if the club thinks you can bring it in that is all they really care about.

kind of off the topic, but on average how much does a PT make an hour?
Chuck Norris once lost his keys and couldn't remember where he put them. So he tortured himself for half an hour until he gave up their location.

Depends on location and whether or not they are self employed or work for a gym. For someone working on their own its around $35 or more per hr
But when you disarm them, you at once offend them by showing that you distrust them, either for cowardice or for want of loyalty, and either of these opinions breeds hatred against you.

I have a friend who charges $75/hr. He is in incredible shape, but I wouldn't let him potty train my dog for 35 cents an hour.

the problem is having a fully booked schedule of clients so that you're pulling in $35/hour, 8 hours per day though.

Pro bodybuilders often do PT and charge rediculous amounts.

I totally agree with this. As a trainer myself, I would love to see the industry regulated because there are a lot of bad trainers out there who are irresponsible and only out for the money, just like the clubs mostly are. There should be licenses because we can do just as much damage to someone as a physical therapist or chiropractor.

Any trainer who says he can train clients 8 hours a day (plus preparation) and stay properly focused on them all is a liar. I cap my days at 6 hours at the most because otherwise I'm like a zombie with my last 2-3 clients and that's not right if they are paying me to be there. Any more than 3 in a row without a break and I usually start to get unfocused. I make $40 an hour, but the head trainer at my place makes $75 - but he's an incredible trainer and really knows his stuff (he's my trainer as well).

As for the looks issue, I think all trainers should practice what they preach and be an example to others of what you can achieve through healthy exercise and diet.
Today I can do what others will not so that tomorrow I will do what others cannot.

The difference between winners and losers is that winners do things that losers don't want to do.

All I know is that our Gold's Gym, the owner decided to bring in a Fitness team of trainers and they all wear these purty little polo shirts etc.

Now, I have nothing against that but when you walk up to people like a telemarketer and/or tell people how to train or their doing it wrong will get your ASS KICKED!

I'm waiting for that to happen. Also, if your the head honcho and you want to sit and run your mouth off to me... you've made the WRONG mistake!!!

    They'll see!!! They WILL see!
