Question Price of metal doubled ?!?

I hope this is just some stupid rumour that I heard and not real.

I heard China or Japan ( can't remember which ) is building this huge godamn dam and is taking all the metal.

My girlfriend heard at work that the price of metal DOUBLED overnight Is there any basis of truth to this?

Well there goes my main job, I can't imagine many projects popping up with prices like that.

it is quite true my dad works for Stanley Works and he goes to China all the time and they are having a very difficult time getting their hands on steel at a decent price. Dont expect it to go down in the near future either is the word

    Heavy metal all the way

I used to be a welders apprentice. Did this for about a year then I decided it sucked and went back to school. I'm still in school and working (well not for the last month ) for a welder part time. We are great friends, the pay is good, but the business is so slow right now and with this damn price hike I better get my ass onto other things.

I think a lot of the price hike has to do with the recent tariff on foreign steel. Even though it was lifted, foreign companies have marked the price up just to punish us.

    Supply and Demand

I have a friend who works for a major steel company here.

The metal business has been flat for years. Then starting this year, many government and corporate contracts are coming up, which they need the material for. And I am just referring to domestic projects here in the US. With many mills closing or merging over the last five years, there are only so many places you can get metal. If you gotta have it, and you waited until now, you're gonna pay.
I'm just curious when it's gonna crash, which it will, as things always do.

Well acording to what my GF heard, the Chinese are going to spend the next 10 years building this fricken thing and they are going to need all the metal they can get. Apparently Greenpeace is on their ass because this dam could change the whole ecosystem. I wish people would leave good enough alone.

Well, lets face it... humans will shape the face of this planet in our own image to accomplish our goals. Its a part of something inherent in us. For China to build this massive dam is not surprising, it will probably expand their capabilities quite alot, and considering they fancy themselves the worlds next superpower they really need to have a sizeable infrastructure in place to begin working towards that goal.

As to the steel price hikes, I wonder what impact this is going to have on everything else in the industry. For example, will we be paying more for cars now? Will my airline tickets increase because airlines now have to pay more for places? Will my housing prices increase because of any necessary metal work involved? There are a million and one things this could have an effect on. I have to admit that I'm pretty interested in seeing what those will be

The 3 Gorges Cesspool? Uses alot, but there are other huge projects around the world hogging all the steel too (pipelines, bridges, etc. Go work in a scrap metal yard, I hear it's almost at precious metal status due to a lack of raw materials for producing steel.
