MESSAGE FROM THE ADMINISTRATOR
Women's History Month -- March 2004

This month, NASA joins with other agencies and organizations in honoring the accomplishments and achievements of women throughout our nation, as we celebrate National Women's History Month.

We are fortunate that outstanding women have helped inspire hope and possibility throughout the first century of flight. Like NASA's own mission "to inspire the next generation of explorers," the theme of this year's observance, "Women Inspiring Hope and Possibility," gives us the opportunity to celebrate the milestones of visionary women explorers.

During Women's History Month we are reminded of pioneers like Amelia Earhart, the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean; Bessie Coleman, the first African American -- male or female -- to earn a pilot's license; and the "Mercury 13," a team of ground-breaking aviators from the 1960s who paved the way for the first female astronauts in the 1980s.

Throughout NASA, a number of extraordinary women play an integral role in our agency's success. They serve as scientists, engineers, astronauts and administrators, making significant contributions to NASA's mission and new vision for space exploration. Currently, pioneering women help lead our Mars Exploration Rover team, direct our efforts to understand the effects of space travel on the human body and remain at the forefront of NASA's Return to Flight preparations.

I encourage you to participate in planned programs and activities commemorating Women's History Month at NASA and in your communities. As women continue to reach historic achievements, we look to them to inspire not only our nation, but also the next generation of explorers.

Sean O'Keefe
NASA Administrator

Women's History: A brief overview

1) God made an apple
2) God told a woman not to eat the apple
3) She ate it anyway
4) We've had to listen to women's bitchin' ever since.

Rules? You mean we have RULES for that???

Hi Butterfly. hope you and baby are doing well.

I'm curious...did NASA celebrate Black History Month in February?

Tomorrow may be the best day of your life.

Or not.

Women's history and NASA in the same sentence?

When the hell were they allowed out of the kitchen to do this?

I don't know... I don't always read these emails that come thru. Seems like something they would do though.

Great post butterfly. My past dream when growing up was to one day become a cargo load specialist (scientist that oversees the research cargo on board the space shuttle dealing with zero grav research) but alas, sigh.............this harks back to what my dad used to say to me...... shoot for the stars and you may not reach them but you will still end up on the moon.

Got me pops, I guess it's one of those hisotries where they pick and choose the events they want to talk about.
ex. talk about all the good that women did and leave out everything else.

......which just makes me wonder why they would need a whole month to celebrate that Surely they could sum it all up in a couple of hours or so

I have to agree with I are Baboon, irontime's statement is hilarious.

But seriously, why do we have women's history month?

We have women's History Month so that everyone has the chance to gain a better understanding of women. It's not to further segrogate people, it's to bring them together through education and appreciation.

For a long time, history has been about men, - I don't think it's too much to ask to take one month and learn a little bit more about women. When I was a young aspiring scientist, why was I never taught about Roslayn Yalow, Marie Mayer ( who won the Nobel Prizes in physics) or the slew of great mathmeticians (Sophie Germaine) and other scientists (Dorothy Hodgkin) that won Nobel prizes or forged new theories rather than the token Marie Curie? I think that's what this month is about. Until their names are as recognizable as Watson and Crick, who deserved the Nobel prize, but whose accomplishments in the scientic field are no greater than the women nobel prize winners, we need this month.

There is one race, and that's the human race. But that one race is made up of a lot of different faces. They each have their own individual history and collective history that needs recognition. As for this month being in tow with feminism (I don't agree with that token label) I like the quote below:

"I myself have never been able to find out precisely what feminism is. I only know that people call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that differentiate me from a doormat or a prostitute."

I believe you are just joking IT but there are people who still believe crap like that and it just burns me up I don't consider it a subject to joke about.
