Old people say they are wise, I say 99,9% of them live in fear. They are too afraid to jeopardize what they already have acquired in life.
Serious replies are appreciated.
One thing thats stuck with me was something Tuvok(ST:Voyager) said while talking about death-"In accepting the inevitable, there is peace."
Getting old is the slow withdrawl of potential and freedom. Old age for my generation wont be much differant that young age was though.. computer games, and porn! People ussually dont change much over time.. Old wise people were the knowitalls in they're younger years as well. For that same reason Id have to disagree that 99.9% of old people live in fear of jepordizing what they have; because you only jepordize something you have if there is something to gain. People who have aquired something to lose aren't the types to be afraid to use it(except maybe lottery winners, and inhertance- peope who didnt earn what they have)
If you worry about being old, you will regret what you did in your youth.. in essence waste your entire life to irrationality. We all do everything we do for happiness. Whether you go to church, work out, drink some chocolate milk, smoke weed, or shoot somebody; You saw something in doing it that did or would make you happy.
Whats the point of being old? The true awnser would be to speed up environmental adaptation. We werent intended to be able to control our environment the way we do. We were instead intended to adapt to the changes as they became nessesary- thus we reproduce. But over population leads to starvation; which means the newer better adapted people could die in the stead of older, defined people. So we die to prevent that as much as possible. Biological machinery such as ourselves is very hard to just set a timer in, instead we developed aging; which would cause people to become incapable of sustaining themselves, and die. Of course, now adays we last till we have organ/cell failure. :P
I believe eventually(long after WE are dead) we will reach a level of biological engineering where we can take the human mainframe, and set it to develop to an age and just maintain itself.. grow new teeth periodically, skin repairs, ect. Not immortality, but life until you're killed.
Back to the happiness thing.. Theres little to be gained by talking about getting old unless you're using the information to plan ect. If you're seriously worried about getting old; all I can suggest is you goto collage and get into the field of genetics and get to work on fixing it Before you do so however, I do ask that you consider.. If you are successful in changing the very roots of humanity by removing aging and death in concerns with age; you will also be able to fix us to not have to w/o to get buff.. you could potentially put IM out of business! Furthermore, all of us bodybuilders will no longer be irresistable sex machines!(Since any slob could then be buff) You could cause more harm than good, be careful!
