You do not need to burn to get a tan! It just takes longer, but its healthier, to gradually build a tan. If you are worried about burning in 10mins start at less time like 5 or 7 and if you dont get pink, keep upping, if you get pink stay the same or decrease by a minute or two.

I grew up on an island in new jersey. Of course we never bothered much with lotions, and spent the whole summer on the beach. Then, a long time ago, owned a tanning salon for a while. Just had skin cancer removed 3 weeks ago. Probably a combination of the two. Who knows.
If anyone wants a scare I have a pic of myself the day after the surgery. Doesn't look too bad now though. |

I don't agree with my friend either. Especially since I'm more fair skinned.
So you think that once a week for 10mins without burning with a tanning lotion designed for use with a tanning bed will eventually provide a gold/brown & not be risking my health? |

I would say that its safe to go 15-20 minutes every other day.
I don't know if they have variable intensity levels on these machines or not - but that would be a typically safe exposure level for natural sun. -Jim

Do you think it would be the same for a tanning bed that has just had new bulbs put in?

greekblondechic if they are new bulbs & I'm more less fair skinned, would 10mins be too much & cause burning? If the bulbs have been there for a few months already, would 10mins be okay or no?
Metal V Player she does 15-20mins every other day in the tanning bed? Isn't that too much? I know some ppl who go 15mins only once a week & keep a tan. Maybe she should cut down say once a week only. You don't want anything bad to happen to her or her health. |

If someone is telling you to burn, then he's an idiot.
Where do people get this info? Burning is BAD. |

Yeah that's what I always believed. Burning is never healthy, not even a little bit red. This summer when my father get's his tickets for the F1 race you have to wear a big hat & sunscreen. Every time I've been I see ppl sitting outside with their shirts off. By the end of the event on any of the days, they're red as a lobster. I say to myself are they nuts?
If I go 10mins or less & I don't burn & manage to develop a nice gold n' brown, do you think I'd be at risk of hurting myself for the future? The tanning beds at my gym don't have strength adjustment, they tell you how long to go depending on your skin type. |
