    Major Computer Problems...

Well, I was having some MINOR computer problems and a friend suggested I download Spybot 1.3. Well, I did that a little over a week ago and my prob has gone from very minor to absolutely ridiculous.

I never had pop-ups before and now I do. My pop swatter was removed, most likely because Spybot recommended it's removal. Everytime I type anything in IEs address bar, I get a search page that gives me no info. This search page has been permanently set as my home page and everytime I try to change it it goes right back. Some programs just close spontaneously, namely IE, Spybot and Kazaa Gold and I get random error messages and am told I am out of memory when that should not be the case.

It looks as though I am going to have to wipe my hard drive and start from scratch, for the 2nd time in 3 months. Everything was going so well too.

Anyone recommend a good spyware prog that I can put on that will help with the issue now or after if I have to reboot? Also, is there a way to wipe my hardrive other than just delete folders?
If sense were common, everyone would have it.

Actually, what I would do is first clean out all your IE pages and cookies...on top of that go in manually and clean out those folders. After that manually go in and change your homepage. Find a good popup blocker, most of the spyware stuff out there is crap. Change your security settings.

Most likely that is all you will need to do.

Do you have XP, do you have system restore on. If so try to roll back.

I have XP, but I will not use system restore, that is what caused the original problems a few months ago.

I definitely suggest, format, reinstall, and purchase Norton Internet Security 2004... you'll get a good virus scan, awesome pop up blocker, full software firewall that gives you recommendations on what actions to take, alerts you of anything threatening... it's a great tool that has really made a difference on my home PC... it should run you around 69 bux, don't download it off Kazaa... buy it, cuz you need to register it for the updates to come through which are VERY key...
    Are you kidding me????

Spybot and ad-aware are the two best. The problem is you have an open port (dsl or cable) and you do not have a firewall to block all incoming crap. Until you block it, you won't fix the problem. I suggest installing a firewall and then run spybot or ad-aware to get ride of all the spyware & malware on your computer. Once you block the problems, you should be fine. I use Zone alarm pro.

The spyware had gotten that bad on my box too, my kids download too much crap. Nothing is free, when you download stuff they make their money as an advertiser by installing spyware.

    First download and use adaware:

    http://www.lavasoft.de/

Next, most virus scanners get rid of a lot of spyware. I used Norton and it either worked, or showed me what files were infected and I manually deleted them.

I have XP also and I didn't have to reformat. I'm running fine now.

Most (all?) spyware attacks internet explorer. So just use a different browser like Kata recommended. I use Opera now:

    www.opera.com

Have an antivirus before you download anything from there, in my own experience I only run into a virus from Kazaa 10% of the time I’m downloading something from there, my antivirus (Norton antivirus 2004 pro) automatically stop the download when it detects it. If you’re that worried about virus then make switch to Linux

I use spybot n haven't had any problems with it at all- i have windows xp. imesh was where i was picking up my viruses but i turned my firewalls on n use norton anti virus n run spybot search n destroy every week or so to delete adware. before i did this my pc would get jammed with pop up crap now i only see them if i venture too close to internet explorer but very few of them. i use aol n msn aol is the best if your pc gets screwey you hit the check up button and aol fixes it for you in seconds. if you alredy have dsl through another server (i do with verizon) aol broadband is only $14.95 a month.

That is the price you pay when you try to get pirated software.
There is always the chance of picking up viruses. Kazaa is a peer to peer file sharing network. People you don't know from adam are sharing files with whoever loads the Kazaa software.
Kazaa also has spyware integrated into their software as you pointed out. You have to run an anti-spyware utility to rid yourself of them. My recommendation is adaware by Lavasoft.
Another is Spybot. Outside of that make sure you always have the latest and greatest antivirus dat file definitions installed. The best thing is to set your antivirus utility to update automatically so you can be assured it is always current. Never launch an exe file or unzip a compressed file before scanning it. Right click the file and scan the file before launching it. 90 percent or more of the time it will detect any virus, eliminate, or give you the option to delete it.

As the others have pointed out....Most viruses are targeted toward windows based machines. Many have it in for Microsoft and they seem to be easy targets for viruses. Now if your a native Microsoft user then moving to Linux or Unix is a bit extreme. Again just make sure....

    1. You have the latest anti virus definitions
    2. stamp out spyware with adaware and spybot
    3. Make sure you always load the latest patches. This is one thing that Microsoft is good at. They are usually on top of releasing current software patches to plug open holes that attackers love to manipulate. This means update all your software.. Especially if you're running Office. Outlook is notorious for attacks and worms.

Happy Surfing.... And try winMX...Seems to have less viruses than kazza and I don't believe they have spyware.
