I am curious where the guys get dress clothes..shirt..suits for non-typical builds(athletic). I wear a 16.5 inch neck, 48 inch chest with 35 inch(long ie shirt size) arms but a 33 inch waist. Most stuff off the shelf for that size neck and arms is like a fricking 40 inch waist and looks like a tent. Do you guys get tailored shirts? Does anyone make a athletic or similar cut shirt that you know of?

Men's Warehouse. They don't have a huge stock yet, but they're starting to carry more and more athletic cut dress clothes.![]()
Rules? You mean we have RULES for that???
This comes in handy. I went shopping for dress clothes today and all I came out with was a few shirts. No pants, all the freaking pants I tried where so damn tight around the legs, it really pissed me off . Come on people not everyone got little chicken legs.![]()

Same here. I used to wear size 16 1/2 shirts, originally up from 14 1/2, but now I wear 17-17 1/2. Even those are sometimes too tight to button the collar. Fortunately I very rarely wear a tie (weddings and funerals), so I can leave the collar open.Originally Posted by PreMier
Men's Wearhouse will recut a suit to fit you. My salesman told me that you fit the shoulders first, then everything else about the jacket. If the jacket and pants needs to be recut, they will do it. There's a charge for it, but it's pretty reasonable. This is one of the best ways to get a mid-priced decent suit for a hard to fit guy. I won't go anywhere else for a suit or sport jacket, ever again.Originally Posted by ALBOB
I bought some of those spring button things for the neck. It's kind of like a button with a spring loop. Give's another 1/2 to 1 inch in the collar, I think. Either way, it lets me wear shirts that fit, but gives me some breathing room in the collar.
Yep, they do that but the problem is that even if the shoulders fit, if the waist is too far off it won't hang right after they re-cut it. They recently started carrying an "athletic cut" suit that may still need to be fitted but won't need to be cut as much. Hangs much better after fitting. They usually don't carry shirts with necks more than 18" but they can order them and have them in stock within a week.Originally Posted by Minotaur

They have a good selection of suits there and good prices.Originally Posted by ALBOB
42 regular for me. 33 waist, 15.5 neck, 33/34 arm.
I buy most of my clothes at Filene's (a Macy's kind of store here in the NE). I don't wear suits to work, but I do wear dress pants, dress shirts, and ties. End of season sales rock. You can get $60 dress shirts for like 75% off if you combine a sale with coupons.Outlet stores are good. Geoffrey Beene and Perry Ellis stores have some nice stuff at good prices. I love Geoffrey Beene ties.
God damn, I am a shopping whore. I must have 20 dress shirts, 15-20 pairs of dress pants, 50 ties and 10 pairs of dress shoes.I prefer colored shirts to boring-ass white shirts. I hate white shirts. I only wear one when all my colored shirts are either in the wash or waiting to be ironed. I don't take my shirts to the cleaners. Those fuckers use too much starch and it feels like I am putting on cardboard instead of a shirt. I wash all my own shirts, and ironing them all only takes an hour or so. It's worth it for a soft shirt.
Yeah, I guess if you have a chest:waist drop of more than 10", there are probably limits to recutting. An athletic cut is probably in order. It seems I'll never have that worry.Originally Posted by ALBOB

I look for all the sales too. I've got at least double that number of dress shirts. Now I'm becoming a slacks whore too. Where will it end?Originally Posted by I Are Baboon
I've weeded out the ties though, since I rarely wear one.
I wear long sleeves in the winter and short sleeves (and polos) in the summer. I know there's no such thing as a short sleeve dress shirt, but since I don't wear a tie, the're all sport shirts. Most of mine are all colors and patterns too, but I do have a few whites. White is really nice occasionally.
I have tried washing and ironing my own shirts, and they come out nice, but I always go back to my local cleaners. I can't be bothered doing it myself. I get light starch, but you can ask for no starch. The shirts will still be pressed nicely. I guess I'm lucky in that I have a really good cleaner who launders and presses the shirts on premises. And they use cold water so the shirts don't shrink. Another place I went to sent the shirts out to a commercial laundry who shrunk and stained shirts, not to mention being inconsistent with the starch. I love the people I go to now.
It's funny, that's exactly the thing the salesman told me to look for. Normally the suit size vs. the pants size has only about an 8-10 inch difference. (Size 50 suit with size 40 pants.) When you're looking for a more athletic cut you look for a larger difference. (Size 50 suite with size 36 pants.) That will tell you the suit itself has a larger taper already built in and will be much easier to tailor.Originally Posted by Minotaur

You can also look into getting suit separates. A lot of department stores carry the jacket and pants separate that way you can get a good fit.
Most upscale suit stores Josh A. Banks (my favorite) can taylor you suit for a price and it will fit just fine. You just have to be willing to spend more money and having it taylored will probably run you about another $100-$150 if there is that much work that needs to be done.
man, i can just picture IAB ironing his shirts while watching his beloved sox's getting there butts kicked on a sunday evening!
