welcome back IT, glad to see things are working out for you. For me, it'd be as easy as which pays more, and which if either will put a hinder on your relationship and it's future.
teaching is crap anyway
Hey guysIt's been a little while so I'll fill you in on what's been happening so far.
Well for the past few weeks the lumber mill has had me going pretty steady, and I've got to say that I love it there. Management is awesome, the work is good and the pay is great. They really liked the work I did for them and said that a few people would be retiring at the end of summer and if I wanted the first spot that I can have it.
Now the original plan was to go back to college and get my bachelors, as I only have my associates. But this college only takes 40 people out of the whole province and I had a letter saying that I was on hold as right now they were taking averages of 92% and I have an average of 72%, so the odds look a little low
So instead of taking the chance of missing the opportunity I grab it, they even approved it and gave me an accpentance letter for the mill. Then sure enough, a few days later I get a 'congratulations letter, you have been accepted to the bachelors program'![]()
Now that put me in a bit of a dilemaI know how hard it is to get into that mill, and if I backed out after saying how much I wanted to work there then they would never take me back........but I also have this college crap to think about.
Basically it came down to what I'd rather do.
What do I like better, teaching or mill work? - mill work
What is less stressful? - mill work
What pays better? - mill work
More advancement? - mill work
more holidays? - teaching, but you're doing homework till 9 every night.
So I figure to go with my gut on this one and take the opportunity while it presents itself. If something happens to the mill I always have my education to fall back on. Well not sure when I'll be able to pop around again, hopefully soon. See ya guys![]()

by the way, very cheeseball putting your name in the title![]()
If I were in your shoes I'd probably lean toward the mill................I just want to make sure you're thinking about your future. What will be your chances of EVER getting into that Bachelor's program if you don't do it now? Again, just something to think about.
Rules? You mean we have RULES for that???

Have 30+ kids and home school them if you want to teach so bad.
On a serious note: What is the future of that lumber mill? You have to look over the horizon and try to see where it puts you. Mill/factory work in these day's can be shifty. What transferable skills will it provide you? If you decide to go back to school how difficult will the change be to go from working mode to student mode?

but oh they have yet to be experienced and that makes aging so very worth it...ML circa2012
Yeah id definatly go with a degree. If just to fall back on.

How does mill work have more opportunity for advancement in the long run? Granted my bachelor's degree seems to mean nothing, but I suppose it will amount to something eventually.![]()
I say you made a good decision. If you make good money, set up a 401k or some kind of an account for when you retire. Invest now, while you are young. Then when you are older, you could always be a teacher.

i don't understand how mill work has future/advancement
but most of us are programmed/taught to seek education first. For that reason I'd say go for school
but then again, we were never taught when education must end and allow ourselves to move down other roads
still... i find your pros/cons list possibly biased (I see no cons for mill work?) so maybe you're just being blindsighted by the money?
just food for thought, and I'm typically more full of food than thought![]()

Hey guysWell I have a few minutes before I have to get, but I'll try to quickly answer the questions.
First of all Crhomo, it was very clever of me to get my name into the title like that so piss off
As for the future of the mill, it looks great. It is one of the biggest mills in the industry putting out 560, 000 board feet in an 8 hour shift. I know most of you don't know what that means, but it's pretty damn good. The last mill I worked for only did 420, 000 in a 10 hour shift. Canfor ( Canadian Forest Products) is investing millions into that mill in an effort to make it recycle it's own energy with a new technology that will utilize it's waste (wood, not crap) instead of having it burned.
As for advancement, there is plenty. There are opportunities to move up into management positions if you work and try hard.
As for the money, I don't think that is why I'm doing this. I've had many opportunities to stay at the mill that I've been working at for the last 4 summers, but I just didn't like it there. And it also paid more money than teaching. Believe me when I say that I didn't come to this decision easily.
And as for Premier's comments, he pretty much had the same line of thought I was going on. If I want to go substitute or something after I retire, I'm already set up to goWell I better piss off, got an hour before work. See ya guys

Ah piss off you old fartas for your intellectual comment;
Believe me pops, that was my biggest issue over my decision. But basically it came down to that it would be easier for me to get back into the program than it would for me to get back into the mill after telling them how much I wanted to work there and then backing out of it.Originally Posted by ALBOB
I figured that if I like it there so much (and I told them so) that it would pretty stupid to go back on my word and then try to get back in there later.![]()
