Arnold of course.
who is

Arnold of course.
Arnold's the most popular, Dorian Yates was the greatest.
Have to agree with that one. He may not be the biggest but he was certainly the best.Originally Posted by Robert DiMaggio

by "greatest" are you referring only to physiqe or does contribution to the sport come into play?

My take on this is that Arnold is the most popular and famous, but I believe that the current Mr. Olympia, and please correct me if I'm wrong, Ronnie Coleman (?) is amazing and Lee Haney who dominated in the 80's and who was said then to be the greatest Mr. Olympia. I have seen him lately and he still looks amazing after all these years...
Let me not forget about Yates.
Damn, I need to make up my mind....
I guess Arnold, go figure....

Rules? You mean we have RULES for that???

the mistake you're making is you're comparing a physique (Dorian) built with many advancements in the sport including drugs, diet/nutrition, supplements, etc.
If Arnold were in competition in this day and age imagine how much bigger his physique would be, especially legs.
Besides that Arnold is the "pioneer of bodybuilding", so no matter what he will always be ther greatest.![]()
I agree with the rest of your post, but this I have a problem with. I'd agree if you said he popularized it more than any other Mr. O, but to call him THE pioneer? I think people like Reg Park, Larry Scott, Joe Weider, Joe Gold, etc. might have something to say about that.Originally Posted by Robert DiMaggio

True about the advanced supplements but they had drugs back then as well and they all damn well used em. But I'm not getting into all of that. Arnold still goes down as NUMBER ONE for many reasons. For the minimal "amount" of drugs he took, he was a monster for that period as well as someone that would still draw the attention of many if he were walking down the street or even in an Amature Comp.(and probably some pro contests as well).
Big BIG POINT TO REMEMBER HERE: In those days MORE was better.
By all thoughts and phylosophies today, training as Arnold and those guys did back then would today be considered Overtraining and may have actually held him back from his ultimate potential. He spoke of how he would do 100 sets of squats at times. 25 heavy sets for Chest was the norm. Even more for Back. They did not have the supplements as we do today that would aid in recovery etc as we do now so I don't care what anyone says here, Arnold used to overtrain. But that was the belief back then and even into the 80's and 90's. Just my thoughts.
Arnold Numero Uno.
Alright, let's put it this way. Take every Mr. Olympia there ever was, stand them side by side all in their peak shape. Who would win ?
Spike would win!

So, based on Arnold's body type (I am talking about muscle fiber make-up) and his drug use I have to disagree that he overtrained.
And there is no doubt in the advancements of suplements, nutrition, and drugs today than what was available back then. I believe that with Arnold's genetics if he were a pro bodybuilder in this day and age no one could beat him.
And to Albob, yes I realize there were many other bodybuilders as you mentioned that could be called the "pioneers" but what I really meant is Arnold brought bodybuilding out to the public like no other. And even today when any "lay person" talks about muscle they say "big like Arnold". So what does that tell you?
