Frankly it seems to be the only reasonable option.
a) If you call the cops, hell be out of jail in 6 months, just as, or even worse off in the nut job department.
b) If you beat the living hell out of him, even just for 1 or 2 minutes, you'll still probably be in jail longer than him.
c) Taser or pepperspray him if the branch is high enough and watch him fall to a comical death.(Probably end up in jail again)

I wouldn't have raped him with the tree branch, although I applaud their originality, but I will bet he would not have left there breathing. I agree with you wholeheartedly and in fact, I agree with the guy that said that he would have taken him to a desolate area and, well, disappeared him. Ok, I added the last few words.
