Help with my computer, please

Hey, Im having some computer issues. I can pull up sites, but I cant get to far on them. Like I can get to my email home page, type in my name and password, but after like 60 sec of searching I get like a 404 page, It happens when I try to pull up maps on mapquest property searches, but I can do most stuff OK. Weird. Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks

Dude I have a Dell, with windows XP I used to connect through another computer, but as of a week ago I connect through mine, thats when it happened. I guess Its bellsouth DSL broadband. Thanks again

May be true network comm errrors. Have you put XP SP2 on? I have seen alot of errors like this and trying to access websites or apps in thew last coupel days

404 errors are just timed out pages basically.... you probably are just having a string of bad connection times with your internet right now. It happens to me everynow and then. If you'd like if you have broadband sometimes resetting the modem will refresh things and increase the speed. There should be a reset button somewhere on it. As far as SP2 right now microsoft can't even get people to download it through there own update system, the one's out there are just pre-downloaded version's of it as far as i can tell. All else fails call up your ISP and complain that you can't search around the net. Most likely they will tell you a router is down in that area or something and it will be fine in a bit. *networking administration student* =P

You could also be infected with malware/spyware. If you can get to Ad-aware SE and download it, run it. That may help you. http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-...l?tag=lst-0-11

No, no firewall.
And Yes its a new dsl modem.

Try clearing your cache, have you also power cycled the DSL modem. That usually helps to re-establish the link withyour ISP.

I'm thinking that, since some spyware programs act as a proxy nowdays.

Unplug/plug back in your model or turn it off/on by the switch let it sit a few minutes whatever. If you can reach some pages and not others though, this is not the problem.

If you use a firewall than you would be able to get around this. You probably have a newer trojan that is going around now. It kills your connection after about 45 seconds to 1.5 min's. This trojan highjacks your connection and acts as a server till you kill it. The name of the trojan keeps getting changed but the operation is the same. You are up and running for a min' than you get 404's. Check with your internet provider and see if there is any activity from your IP. Your computer may be a porn server when you connect up.

A fire-wall will give you back your connection because it will only allow the programs that YOU authorise to connect ... thereby halting the trojan. As the programs try to connect the fire-wall asks you if it is OK for them to do so. A log is created and you can toggle off and on the authority.

Got a nieghbor that you can mooch a copy of their firewall from? Go bug a neighbor for one. They are small enough to put on disk and easy to load. Your a bad boy for not using one any way. Have any virus protection? No you don't have that either. GET SOME!!!

You can download zonealarm pro and it is free for 15 days. Then you have to purchase it and enter a key code. I have it and it is a good program. I would not run my computer without it.

Good sign then that it is spyware. Some of it operates in such a way as trying to defeat antivirus programs. A friend here at work tried to download Ad-aware and everytime he clicked on download, it closed IE. I finally zipped it to him and he opened it from an e-mail and got it to work. When he finally run SE, he had all kind of crap. His computer was even running higher than 80% with nothing open. Go into task manager and check your performance and see if anything is running.

Someway, you are going to have to get Ad-aware SE on your computer and run it and delete all the spyware so you can downlaod ZA. I have had some on my work computer so bad, I had to go into safe mode and it takes the better part of 45 min or so to do it. If you have never done it, I would recommend not trying it.

SE gets stuff that spybot and others don't. It really is the best out right now IMO. I doubt it is the router. What kind do you have?

I was able to down load it. It wipped some stuff of my computer, like My outlooks said it couldnt find some programs. I think I got most stuff now but that was real weird.
My computer guy had no idea what it is either
