His music is piss poor.
Since Prince started one regarding the Beatles (band) I'll start one for the King of rock and roll, Elvis Presley.
His music is piss poor.

I've been watching the DVD called "That's the way it is," which features behind the scenes rehearsals and a show Elvis did in Las Vegas in 1970.
Some songs were very moving: the song called Twenty days performed in the studio really moved me. As well as many others.
Some of the King's songs are corny to me. Like "hound dog," and "love me tender."
But he had many great ones, and he changed the face of music by being an individual.

Long live the King.

Without a doubt he was the King of rock and roll. Everyone imitated him, every guy wanted to be him, and every woman wanted to be with him. His music was covered everything from rock and roll, love balads, Country and western, Gospel and R&B. No person in the history of Rock and Roll has ever or ever will accomplish that. His style was one in a lifetime and never duplicated. He died in 1977 and his music still lives today. Radio stations STILL run Elvis radio shows weekly. Here in Jersey Area they play 3 hours of Elvis every Sunday morning. In the South they do so even more.
Graceland (his home) is one of the top tourist attractions in the Country to this day. No other entertainer has ever reached his stardom or worldwide recognition nor will they ever.
Nice post Snafu. I do agree that some of his songs were pretty bad. Then I've yet to hear of any recording artist or band that had only hits. Keep in mind the times as well. Today,, yea I think Hound Dog wouldn't even get playing time but then again many of his songs if originally done today would still reach the top 10 on the country and western charts. HIs rock style wouldn't do very well today I doubt but still believe the gospel and Country would do very well in todays times.

His live performances really revved things up. I really like "that's alright mama" life. It's a heavy, fast rock and roll song, when he plays it live.

All I can say is I never understood his popularity, unbelievable to this day...and when I say I don't understand, I mean I do not think his singing was that great, so I am dumbfounded to why he had/has so much fame. But then again I feel the same way about Michael Jackson.
so, I voted over rated.
Way over rated. Not gonna say he sucked, but compared to many other artists, I find him lacking.

I'm not keen on his music, but you have to admit he was revolutionary especially in those prude day's of the 50's. Just the thought of all those uptight people seeing him for the first time and thinking how bad it was that he moved his hips in a vulgar way makes me laugh knowing that only twenty years before they were caught up in the Swing era listening to "negro jazz" and the Roaring 20's before that sneaking "bathtub gin" and dancing wildly in speakeasy's.

Think he was way overrated. He didn't even write his own songs.
Neither did N'Stink, yet they just happen to be the single greatest band of all time! Remember, talent is highly overrated.Originally Posted by cjrmack

For the record, I voted overrated. I, actually, kind of like some of his music. However, I own none.
I don't care for his music, myself.

it's not looking too good for Elvis.
This is a good point.Originally Posted by cjrmack

One example: "suspicious minds"
I love the song, but like many others, someone else put it together.
I believe a lot of Elvis' lore is in his Heuristic Value.

I voted overrated too, but I didn't start caring about music until the 1960's and Elvis had already hit his legendary status and was doing movies. He was definitely a major influence on all rock music, and his songs have been covered so many times that they are classics. I think his biggest achievements included introducing rhythm and blues and helping pave the way for many Black artists. . . and while his movements were considered scandalous at the time (the censors made him be filmed on television from the waist up only) he was considered one of the most mannerly young men in popular music.
True to form, fundamentalist American religious groups screamed that he should be banned, destroyed his records and tried unsuccessfully to campaign against his "morally corrupt" influence - that faded by the 1960's, where the threat of the Beatle' long hair and Ann-Margret's suggestive dancing took their attention. But Elvis produced 20 years of hits - a feat only a handful of artists in popular music have ever accomplished.
Kmb good points... As I stated earlier... let the "charts" do the talking. NOw I can totally understand todays generation saying he is over rated or that they don't care for his music. That makes total sense since Like I said earlier, His rock is not todays rock. If someone got on stage today and sang to a teddy bear they would be laughed off stage. Think of the era guys. Again I say he was so innovative and led the way to what rock is today. He broke boundaries that others would not or could not. He took "old" rythm and blues songs and made them top 10's. I dunno. I still consider him the greatest of all tlime but I respect all your opinions. (keep in mind kids,,,I'm 42).
Oh and lastly,,, you listen to his later music and you hear his voice. He.....unlike MOST rock n roll artist today could hold a note. His music wasn't all about screaming lyrics. He COULD actually sing expecially after his voice matured.
