Sounds like some addware may have made a home on your computer...
Get the program called "addaware." You can download it from CNET.
http:\\www.download.com and search software for Addaware. Run it regularly to zap all your addware and spyware bs that collects on your system from visiting various websites. Another one that you can download is called spybot.
I use the two of them concurrently. You can usually shut down the processes through task manager, or of course reboot your computer, but those babies are still running in background collecting your information such as which sites your visiting etc etc. Sometimes they take over your browsers home page and inserts one that you don't want etc. etc.

Outside of that, A good practice is to clear your cache regularly from within your web browser and run defrag periodically. It will tell you if your system is fragmented enough to require running it. When I need to do in on mine I run it at night, since it takes a long time.

Spyware is a serious issue now.

I use the new Adaware SE, Spy Sweeper, and Hijack This!

I run most of the scans in safe mode when things are really bad. Even then, I will run RegClean and whatever else I can think of to make sure things are really gone.

I am working on a certificate in computer security right now and have gone over all this stuff with a fine tooth comb. I had always run adaware and all those spyware/adware utilities prior. There are a lot more threats than meet the eye in the computer world ... I am a privacy advocate as it is, and always am for taking the extra measure in security.

It's funny how people used to laugh at me for being so careful and being reluctant to provide my personal information through the wire. Hell, I'm still that way. You would be surprised at how many peoples lives everyday are being compromised by identity theft? Most laugh and deny it, and of course say it will never happen to them... But you would be surprised at how much more of this activity is happening.
