Police can carry Off Duty in all 50 states..
Bush, not to long ago passed a law that allows Peace Officers to carry concealed weapons in all 50 states, where it used to only be the state you worked in and a few other select states.
I personally love the new law, giving Police a small advantage they didnt have before.. just wanted to know your opinions of it.

But when you disarm them, you at once offend them by showing that you distrust them, either for cowardice or for want of loyalty, and either of these opinions breeds hatred against you.

It's the Republican's way of "increasing" the number officers in the field, so they dont have to pay overtime, or pay for more officers. Bush is also the one who stopped the "COPS" program, which pays for more officers, vests, cruisers, etc. HE just threw them a bone

If civilians are permitted to have CCWs I don't see why off duty cops shouldn't have them. Good luck to the cops.

Police are human also, and are subject to the same problems that us"mortals" are. I think they should be evaluiated more heavily before being given explicit rights to cary off duty. There was a incident about 4 months ago in my town where a cop got drunk and proceeded to pull out his gun and threaten the bar with it.

Police are evaluted HEAVILY during the hiring process. TRUST ME, I know. Civilians that carry off-duty dont have to go through half the hoops police have to go through to carry an off-duty weapon. The fact that one or two police officers may sift their way through the system is just part of the way it works. They cant screen out EVERY bad possible subject. But all the training we go through, we are by far more than qualified to use this privelage more safely than the avg. Joe.

man, listen police officers already can carrry guns with them when they are off dutty, since they are by law on dutty 24/7. I think people should give police officers more respect and not treat them like dumbasses, i wanna see you guys who are comlaining right now do their job! You guys dont know what they go thru in their lifes just to do this job. And yet you wanna sit here and disrespect them by saying " think they should be evaluiated more heavily before being given explicit rights to cary off duty." what the fuck is that supposed to mean ? they have gone under hevy tests before they got hired, i think police officers are super humans and i respect them and look up to them, its my opinion and i know it sound koky. I think it is disrespectfull of poeple who say shit about them because they risk their lifes to protect our ases. I also think that so many people say that they could do their job and so many pople want to do their ob becuse they think its cool but people moslty young dont understand, i know so many guys how ant to be police officers but dont know jack shit about it they just think its cool nothing else, those people will probobly fail the first writen test and let alone the academy

QuestionGuy..... I agree, especially with that last statement. I met so many people who wanted to be a cop for the simple power of the position. They fail to realize how much responsiblity comes with that power, on AND off duty.

Are you both growing mustaches since you know.. your gonna be cops?
j/kGood idea. However, I dont think that an off duty officer thats in another state should 'Take the law into his own hands' so to say.(IE: They see some 16 year old kid smoking, and try to give him a ticket)

The thought that cops can go bad so no cops should carry guns is stupid. Teachers and priests can be pedophiles does that mean we should close the schools and churches.

Police officers are not suppsed to be caryin a weapon while consuming any amount of alcohol.
Which tells me 2 things here. 1st someone fed you full of shit. OR 2nd that cop was pretty lousy and didnt probobly wanna do it anymore (close to retire) but i think its probobly bull shit. it could also be someone impersonating a cop since civilians do not always get the full story or the police report. A lot of guys who have guns consealed weapon permints will act cool and impersonate a police officer not knowing that they can go to jail for up to 10 years on that |

I think its crap. Officers should have always had that abilty, lol. They are on duty 24/7, so why the hell would they not carry a firearm, aside from their own discretion? If we cant trust our LEOs off duty, then we really shouldnt trust them on duty.

Question guy, never once did I say it was a bad idea, nor did I disrespect the honored profession of being a police officer. The only thing I said was they need to be evaluated just like the rest of us humans. As far as being fed full of shit, ya that must be right because I never read the papers in my city. AND I went as far as saying I could never do the job. Drop it already.

I'm not worried about police officers being dangerous with fire arms, i'm worried about their driving abilities. They should be required to attend performance driving classes on a regular basis, as it's a huge part of their job.

This law is horrible. It says that police are a special class of citizens that are above the rest of us. If the average person cant carry concealed across the nation then the police shouldnt be allowed to either. Special rights dont help anything.
(The argument about police knowing better than regular people about how to handle gun situations isnt really valid. Police shoot the wrong person at a higher percentage of the time than CCW holders do.) |

The law is great. However, it should be broadened to allow all adult citizens to carry concealed weapons at any time, in any state.
If everyone were easily able to carry concealed weapons, muggers et al would think twice about committing crimes. And, if they were to commit the crime, at least the victim can level the playing field by being able to protect himself. Gun control means being able to hit your target. |

Thats the stupidest comment Ive ever read. Police shoot the wrong person at a higher percentage? Police are put in shooting situations for a living, the percentages of Police Officers getting in shootings compared to a regular person with a CCW alone are probably 99 percent to 1. Well DUH Police are going to make more incorrect assesments, given the fact that they are commonly put in stressful situations on a daily basis where force has to be used. The statement itself is ludacris.

Not sure about what the law(if it was passed) reads. I know we have reciprocity with several states around NC, but not all 50. YET! And it's different if you show your ass when you get drunk and have a gun. If I ever see one wave it or show their ass while they have one, they are in for a good ass chewing! FWI, I carry one just about everywhere I go also, but I definately don't show my ass. And most bars like it knowing they have an officer there.

And I can verify that police are put in shoot/no shoot situations way beyond what any private ccw holder will be. Training is very intense. Police are also in those situations much more than any person normally. Yes police do make mistakes. We are all human. You have to remember these are split second, life threating situations and you don't have time to think..................just react. It's in those situations where your training comes in!

They are required to attend performance driving tests all the time, plus when they are on duty. They are profesional drivers and they know how to drive, yes better then you.
