    Internet Problem...

I have recently been having some kind of a problem with my internet browser. Whenever I want to open an image or even select a smiley from the quick reply here on this forum, I get an "error on page" in the status bar.

    My computer info:

    Browser: Internet Explorer 6.0
    Operating System: Windows XP

BTW, I have tried many different things, including turning on cookies, but nothing seems to work. Any help or suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks.

I can't because I already have it installed and it says I can't install the same program twice.

Do you have a firewall? Are you using virus protection? Is your computer turned on? (J/K) Go to this site for a free online virus scan just for chuckles and grins. Then go here for a free check up on your pc. Try using another browser. If you do not have one on your pc than download netscape 7.2 an install it and give it a whirl. When getting hijacked I have been able to use a new browser to get the pc back in my control and find the culpret. Once you know what program is jacking you around you can go back to IE ... if you like to.

For some changes to take effect, you need to shut down and restart.

I have installed netscape and everything seems to work when I use it. How do I uninstall IE 6 now? I went to Add/Remove programs, but it's not there and I don't have uninstall IE either. Anyone know???

BTW, thank you all for helping me with this, I appreciate it!

as i understand it, ie is part of win xp. can't remove it.

v.6 was installed with xp sp2 (if you didn't already update ie to v.6 prior to sp2 installation). or was it with sp1? don't remember.

Netscape is not the best browser for your needs really. I just suggested you put it there to help you get the trouble maker located. Now you can scan your system and see what is giving you this stress. Have you used pcpitstop yet?

ok, just checked. ie 6 came with the xp.. no service packs. ie 6 sp1 came with windows xp sp2.

    from ms:

"Internet Explorer 6 is preinstalled by default in all versions of Windows XP. To provide computer manufacturers greater flexibility in configuring desktop versions of Windows XP, Microsoft has made it possible for OEMs, administrators, and users to remove user access to Internet Explorer while leaving the Internet Explorer code intact and fully functional to ensure the functionality of programs and operating system functions that rely on it. For example, Windows XP supports an "IEAccess=off" switch in the Unattend.txt file, and Internet Explorer has been added to the Add/Remove Windows Components section of the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel."

At the end of the report there is an are that tells if you are virus free and spyware free. You are clear there too? Did you look at that specifically?

I have Norton Internet Security so I know I don't have any virus. I did the report with IE.

strange. Sounds exactly like the problem i had. "Error on Page" when I would select a smiley, or try to do bold, underline, etc. did you select "delete all offline content" when you delete the temp internet files? delete cookies? do it while logged out?
