Agreed. Besides, if they all stay fat it makes us look better. It's an optical illusion

I have to say, I blame parents for not teaching their kids better habits. But moreso, I blame society for not teaching people how to appropriately deal with their emotions and that's not something a parent can teach if they don't know it themselves.

BTW, I KFC's chicken ceasar salad
    I can do it

I have a friend that I care a great deal about. She is around 310 now. She was a smoker two weeks ago ... I will probably be taking her and her boyfriend out to dinner for her success. I goaded and challenged her into quitting the cancer sticks. I did not get mean, but was just questioning her expectations at her health for being so overweight. The lady has wanted to loose the weight for a long time and has tried several times but gets stuck around 265. She is now a member on IM and will start a journal soon as she works her way down the scales. She is using FitDay to keep up with her caloric intake and plan her meals. It does not help that she is a chef for a catering company ... but she is staying under 1500 calories a day while trying to get as close to 1200 as she can. So far so good.

So don't yell. Just ask the hard questions of those you care about and maybe that will be all the motivation needed to get them going to a healthier and longer life.

Dropping calories too much too fast = BAD

That's asking for your metabolism to shut down. She needs to eat at least 10x her bodyweight IMO

Ok, how about she adds up what her usual calorie intake was. Then subtract about 200-300 calories. Then, when she stopped losing weight, lower them a little more. Trust me, 1200-1500 is not enough for her, it's not even enough for me!

Her name is SuperGurl GBC. When I get her in here you are free to help her get that scale to read a more healthy number.
PLEASE >>>>>>>> Do. I am not a nutritionist and am not qualified to give her the advice she needs so I directed her here. She'll be along any day now so drop in and tell her what ya think ... she'll be happy to meet ya too.

Do I agree that this should be covered by the insurance? Hell No, but there's nothing I can do about that now.
I know for a fact that people go to Latin America and Europe to do this procedure because of the high costs involved....
I have yet to see a fat person go to a public hospital to get a gastric bypass for free. Then again, just because I haven't seen it, doesn't mean it doesn't happen, but I need some hard proof to actually believe it.
Sorry I wasnt more clear. I meant heart bypass surgery. This is subsidized since everyone paying their premiums covers all the total costs. If less people had to have these surgerys because of better health then the total cost to all consumers would be lower. I have heard of some HMO's covering gastric bypass because they figure the total cost in the end will be lower since gastric bypass is less than heart bypass. My basic point is that if you choose to be out of shape then your medical costs should be higher because you will cost your insurance more over your lifetime than someone who stays fit.

Sure thing bonecrusher. Encourage her to read the stickies, research the board, and then start a journal. It is one of the best things she can do!

who says i dont yell at fat people? i dont think they should get special treatment simply because they are vertically challenged.

i commend anyone here who is overweight and trying to change their life. the rest of america who refuses to lift anything heavier than a big mac i have no sympathy for. they could change their lives too.

Again, how does that effect me?

I do my best to ensure that our son eats healthy and understands why it's important, he is thin, perfect for his weight, NO fat like most kids. His entire life he has never eaten one of those sugar crap cereals, he eats the semi-healthy ones like frosted mini-wheats.

I cannot change how other people are, how they eat, and how they raise their kids. All I can do is keep myself and my family healthy. I am not going to go around and preach eating right and health to people. If they ask my advice I am more than willing to give it, but not unsolicited.

As far as healthcare, I think lawsuits for bullshit malpractice suits and the insurance the doctors have to carry these days probably has more to do with rising healthcare costs. Don't get me wrong, if there is legit malpractice justice should be served, but the majority are bullshit cases by assholes looking for some easy money.

We talked today and SuperGurl is going to increase her caloric intake some to avoid anything dangerous till she can do more research. She will be here looking for the wisdom of the IM forum.

Yes Max ... and she is my friend and a very good person that needs people like you to help her get past the tough parts. She is not used to posting on an open forum where the words have no faces ... so please don't kick her ass.

Anyway, I would meet friends walking their kids and stop to talk with the parents and the kids would ask me why are you so fat. So make sure you eat your vegetables and run and play instead of watching TV. The kids always smiled and the parents looked like they were going to puke. I'm down now to 238 and fit nicely in the MRI machine.

That is Incredible.Congrats on your success,I know that must've been hard,You are a great motivation.
