America is a Dangerous Junkie

We are all to blame, we have an addiction. We use 25% of the worlds oil production, we have only 4% of the worlds population and 3% of the oil reserves. What do junkies do to keep their habit going? They start stealing and alienate their own families and friends. What happens after abuse of a substance? You get sick, what are our symptoms, global warming, pollution, Osama Bin Laden, Al-Qaeda. Right now we are treating the symptoms, but until we face the disease the symptoms will always be there and will grow more and more lethal. George Bush isn't to blame, he is only reacting to feed the nations addiction, it's our fault. First step is to admit to your addiction.

Hi, my name is Kevin and I'm an oil addict.

You need more options on your poll. Like "yes im an addict, now give me my fix". That one would get my vote.

I know, but I was scared to see how many would've checked it. I'm guessing the same number that will check Bush on Nov. 2.

Hi, my name is George W. Bush and I am an oil fiend.

It's important for our country to understand -- I think most Americans do -- that we import over half of our crude oil stocks from abroad. And sometimes we import that oil from countries that don't particularly like us. It puts us at a -- it jeopardizes our national security to be dependant on sources of energy from countries that don't care for America, what we stand for, what we love. It's also a matter of economic security, to be dependent on energy from volatile regions of the world. Our economy becomes subject to price shocks or shortages or disruptions, or one time in our history, cartels.

I've told you before, I wont vote for Bush. I would vote for "I'm a petroleum addict, now give me my fix though."

So sadly, your logic doesnt hold up in this case. I just like having a house heated by home heating oil, driving a car that runs on gasoline, the convenience of the millions of household items made of plastic, driving on tires, wearing deodorant, wearing synthetic/cotton blends, wearing sneakers and shoes, being able to throw trash in plastic trash bags, using shampoo, using a credit card, sitting on a plastic toilet seat, drinking out of the milk jug, and shaving with shaving cream.

Granted, I could go on for much longer, but you get the point.

I know you don't like Bush, but if you enjoy those things then you'd better learn to ween off of conventional energy or face seeing the economic decline of your country. While we lie in bliss injecting barrel after barrel Europe and Japan are making huge advances in renewable energies. Even banks and insurance companies are finding that investing in solar for their buildings is a wise choice, banks and insurance companies aren't known for risk taking so obviously the numbers must come together somewhere. While they are moving forward we're stuck in the "good oil times", when we need to make the shift they will already be there and we'll be dependent on them for our energy needs.

This map shows the irradiance of the sun across the nation. See those blue shaded areas? Those places have homes that are completely solar. They use Solar thermal to run hot water through pipes to heat their home and photovoltaic panels for electricity, the homes are strategecally designed to enhance their energy efficiency. See that green area on the tip of Hawaii, 90% of my business goes to power entire homes in that spot because it's too expensive to run the utility to them.

If things work out right, I'll be able to buy that brand new H2 next year. I'm hoping they put a bigger engine in it by then. Hell, ANYBODY can have double digit gas mileage.

Manic ... you left out that these same non-grid people can sell their extra energy to the "man" if they are tied in.

Hi my name is I. M. Liberal. I want to go on record as stating that I am an Oil Junkie and I demand that this country go back to an agriculture based economy with horses and farm animals. I am willing to forfeit everything I currently own that depends on oil. Hmm, wait a sec, that's almost everything. On second thought, I want to keep my car, my boat, my motorcycle, my medicines, my shampoos, my electricity, my TV, my PC, my oh my... I am just so confused. I will just whip my self silly with a horse tail whip as a self denigrating penance and deserved self flagellation for all the selfish things I have done in raising the economic standard of the entire world. In spite of the fact that we donate billions of dollars to world relief funds I am going to whip my self silly as punishment for being so greedy and unfortunate to be born in the USA. We are such pigs.

Signed,
I. M. Liberal

p.s. I am John Kerry and I endorse this lunatic and have a plan for punishing all the evil do gooders of this country by taxing those that do not whip themselves for being pigs or vote Republican.

You know I had thought of you as an intellectual for a long time now I see that you are truly just a clueless middle aged man who tries to pretend to be some kind of renaissance man, but in this area you drop into an area of neural sludgery. If you haven't noticed a shift has happened in the past year that will never change, crude jumped to $50+ a barrel, the day's of $36 are gone. Why? Because the worlds demand has overcome it's supply and the population growth points to a future of increased consumption with decreased extraction. Now is the time to make a switch in our energy policy, no one in my industry believes it will happen overnight, in fact we know it will take decades just on the basis of we can't produce nor install the needed systems fast enough as is for the few clients interested. What we need is government credits and subsidies for the manufacturers to keep the products in our country because Germany is sucking our stocks dry.

I have been at an Energy Expo for the last 2 day's, one of the speakers gave a phenomenal speech on how the Government needs to step to the plate and endorse and in fact pay for alternative energy for everyone. It's no longer an issue just of enviromental concern, but one of National security.

Hmm, interesting perspective on me. I never present myself in any particular way. I am just an average guy who is having as much fun as anyone else here - well maybe more fun (sorry).

I use to consult to the oil industry for automation and computer systems to increase oil production efficiency. I have been advocating getting off the foreign oil dependency thing all my life. I see it as the thing that funds our enemies and creates a dependency. This country is playing a strategy that is a huge risk. That strategy is to suck the middle east dry as fast as it can at the lowest cost we can to get an economy of scale on prices (guess who works in the middle east to get that oil out of the ground - a LOT of American ex-patriot consultants like me). The other strategy element is to deny the Arabs an industrial revolution if we can deplete their stocks. The other is to increase their standard of living so they have to increase their infrastructures (roads, water etc.) so that they have a dependency on us or the free market for services and products and they have to trade oil for technology and service. Once their cost of living goes up (living in the old tents was like zero cost) they are forced to play in the economic based arena and we hope get them to not go non-linear into warfare and religious fanaticism due to the economic benefits. Well that was working pretty good until they got lazy and started paying the Mullahs "pacification" money to keep the domestic situation peaceful but were not watching what was happening in the mosques - sermons of hate and contempt for the Saudi family and the West.

The single best thing that can happen now is for the price to be pushed slowly up over 5 years to force us to become independent again with alternative fuels and energies. I'll ignore the personal insults for the time being but really do not care too much what you have thought or currently think about me here.

"America is addicted to oil, which is often imported from unstable parts of the world," Bush said. "The best way to break this addiction is through technology."

Don't worry, they will invent an efficient and abundant alternate fuel source just as soon as everyone promises to be nicer to the Earth.

Why is the U.S. in Iraq?

China oil demand is breaking records every year. India is also buying more.

A failure by the U.S. to plan ahead and the greed of the American oil companies.

Wrong

Not a conspiracy theory at all.

It's just how the world works. Those in power pursue their own interests, even if it is not the most optimal way to do things.

And no, I generally don't believe in "conspiracy theories."
