There have been some good ones mentioned, I will add Autopsy for the death metal. But if you really want something extreme...I would check out some grindcore bands. They arent everyones thing, as there isnt much (any) melody left. The use extremely fast drum beats, with vocals growled/gurgled/ screamed over the top, with fat riffs. The songs rarely last over a minute. I would call it the 'heaviest' stuff I have heard.

(They often have stupid names and sick sexual/gore overtones which puts me off a bit...but you cant hear what theyre saying anyway) Its not really my thing, but it is a lot 'heavier' than the other stuff mentioned.

    Bands:

    Spazz
    Vaginal Carnage
    Leng T'che
    Gronibard
    Libido Airbag
    Christbait
    Anal Cunt
    Pig Destroyer
    Kutabare
    Gore Beyond Necropsy
    Unholy Grave
    Blood Duster

They are from Sao Paulo, and Max got kicked out YEARS ago brother - Soulfly is his new, sucky band that does not have his brother Igor, or Andre Kisser, nor the bass player who I rarely remember. Early Sepultura up to Arise is awesome, I liked Roots a bit, but Chaos AD tanked for me. Schizophrenia, Beneath the Remains and Arise are the best 3 IMO. Morbid Visions/Bestial Devestation were ok, but a bit early for the band in terms of skill and production.

I think Soulfly pretty much, is "teh suck."

    Grindcore:

And of course we can't forget Terrorizer's World Downfall. Nasum is okay, too. I definitely enjoyed later Carcass than their earlier grindcore output.

Heavy is a nebulous concept. Fast and repetitive without atmosphere and hook is sledgehammer aggression - I prefer brooding and diabolical to mindlessly violent. Hear them one and you've heard them all.

Zyklon with Aeon is a perfect example of "heaviness," with compelling atmospheric texturing.

I was about to recommend Sepultura but someone already did. I donīt like very much these type of music but some music of them are quite nice.

How could you have a Heavy Metal thread without mentioning Iron Maiden; the greatest Heavy Metal band of all time!
Homer: Hey! I saved your life! That egg sandwich could have killed you by cholesterol.
Lenny: Pfft, forget it, Homer. While it has been established that eggs contain cholesterol, it has not yet been proven conclusively that they actually raise the level of serum cholesterol in the human
    blood stream.

Yes, I certainly enjoy aggressive music, but only as an occasional, guilty pleasure. Slop or not, although pure slop never held much appeal to begin with (which is why I've always despised punk, both old and new school - pure fucking trash).

If you suffer from anxiety, avoid metal (and fast music in general), and force yourself to listen to something that's more even-paced and sublime- hypnotic, yet structured. It should be music that you already enjoy, of course, not some New Age hollow happy horseshit - but listen to this music almost exclusively, and regard everything else as a restricted pleasure.

    You'll be surprised.....

If you haven't heard or heard of Dargaard. If you want something that's peaceful, yet mystical and satisfying.

Unlike, say, a New Age Tribute to Mother Earth.

Do you play guitar at all? I just dumped my 2nd 5150 head and I want to build up a rack system.
Nope. However, I do have an idea for choral composition - if I ever ran into the money, trying to see where I could go with the idea would be on the top of my list.

I started to mention Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, etc earlier in thread, but got the impression that he is looking for more modern radio type stuff like Hatebreed--not true metal. This whole movement of "hardcore"/"Shouting" stuff sounds pretty much the same and has gone wasy off course from what traditional metal used to be.

Exactly. But Heavy Metal is mentioned in the thread title, so therefore, by default, Iron Maiden has to be mentioned some where atleast once.

By the way, anyone wanting to check out DragonForce, you can DL a kick ass full 8 minute track from their site: http://www.noiserecords.com/download...Will_Go_On.mp3

I have their most recent album. The whole time you listen to it, you swear it is a record playing too fast, even during the slower parts. They do a great job taking traditional metal and molding it into speed/power metal. Much better than Hammerfall and the like, IMO. Although I must admit that I really like Gamma Ray.
Rhapsody is a very creative band for this genre of metal, too.

Sometimes I get into techno-ish stuff, or even classical will get a spin or two. Generally if I'm in the mood for light I go to 80s trash or Yngwie Malmsteen, I haven't put Maiden in the tape player in ages I admit...

I'll check out the band you posted though, thanky

I, too, enjoy Mortiis. However his music wears thin on me, (sometimes) coming across as droning and uninspired. Stargate was good, with some great moments, although I wasn't all too fond of Crypt of the Wizard. His adventure in techno-pop wasn't bad at all on The Smell of Rain, although I hear that The Grudge is generic and bland.

But, that depends on what you're looking for, and what you find within a body of work. Dargaard is more polished and dynamic, and you may very well prefer the minimalist darkness of Mortiis - which I appreciate as well.

Burzum's Det Som Engang Var - the song, not the album - is one song I cannot do without.

Being a euro, I can recommend one band for extreme noise PLUS talent:

Try Amon Amarth. Specifically, grab "Death in fire". I swear, you'll love me for it.
