Could be 3 mins from now, could be 5 million years from now. Who knows? Just remember, if one day you see your skin melting off your bones before you eyes, that "I told you so"....................Rich

Well, the article said the galaxy was 12 BILLION light years away. So, just for argument's sake, let's say the Gamma rays are traveling at light speed. Since the Gamma ray burst was recorded in 1997 we take 12B and subtract seven years. That means you should start wearing some pretty high SPF sun screen in aproximately 11,999,999,993 years...............................give or take a couple millenia.
Rules? You mean we have RULES for that???

I'm not too worried, I have it on good authority that Bruce Willis, Ben Affleck, and the big black dude from the Green Mile will save us. Oh yeah, and that nut job Steve Buscemi.
If sense were common, everyone would have it.

So far we havnt had one close enough to earth for all of us to get kilt. They happen all over, all the time however. And the only way we can notice them is when their light and residual radiation hit earth. For instance the galaxy your looking at, thats 1 billion light years away, is actually the galaxy as it was 1 billion years ago.

So it is with gamma ray bursts. However for a star to be both near enough, and late stage enough, to be dangerous to earth would probably be detectable, "probably". If one happened within 3,000 light years from earth we'd all be dead anyway. And theres nothing we could do about it..................Rich
