Georgia Sheriff Fires Workers, but Then a Judge Intervenes

JONESBORO, Ga., Jan. 4 - On his first day at work, the new sheriff of Clayton County called 27 employees into his office on Monday, fired them and had snipers stand guard on the roof as they were escorted out the door.

A judge on Tuesday ordered him to rehire the employees.

The sheriff, Victor Hill, 39, defended the firings and said he had the right to shake up the department in whatever way he felt necessary.

Sheriff Hill also said it was necessary to fire the workersthe way he did, including taking some deputies home in vans normally used to transport prisoners because the deputies were barred from using county cars.

Sheriff Hill was among a spate of black candidates electedlast year in the county, which was once dominated by rural whites. The fired employees included four of the highest-ranking officers, all of them white. Sheriff Hill told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that their replacements would be black.

Sheriff Hill's move provoked an angry reaction from thenewly elected chairman of the county commission, EldrinBell, who is black. He called the move illegal and filed for the restraining order granted by the judge, Stephen Boswell.

Judge Boswell granted a 30-day restraining order, halting the firings, and wrote that it appeared that "employees of the sheriff were terminated without cause" and in violation
of the county's civil service rules.

Sheriff Hill disagreed.

"A lot of people are under the impression that the sheriff's office is under civil service laws," he said. "But my research shows the employees work at the pleasure of the sheriff."

Sheriff Hill said one of the reasons for the security accompanying the firings was the assassination of Sheriff Derwin Brown in neighboring DeKalb County in 2000. Sheriff Brown was gunned down in the driveway of his home three days before he was to be sworn in. The former sheriff, Sidney Dorsey, was found guilty of plotting to kill him and sentenced to life in prison.

"Derwin Brown sent out letters to 25 to 30 people letting them know they would not be reappointed when he took office," Sheriff Hill said.

The Clayton County Sheriff's Department employs 345 people.

In NC any sheriff deputy is an at will employee. Meaning you can be let go at any time for any reason or no reson. Most new sheriff's will get rid of most employees when he gets in office and bring in his guys. Very common practice here. The sheriff in my county now can not keep employees. Everytime I work I see new faces. Most though are let go for not doing their jobs or for behavior problems off the job.(Getting drunk in public ect.)

I hear yo DG, but what I think is fouled up is to
fire the entire force, not a 1 or 2 member force but a 27 member
force, at one time

I have seen a sheriff clean house when getting elected. You see some deputies campaining with them, because they know if he loses,they are out of a job. This may not make much sense to most people, but you have to know that your guys are dedicated to you!

I think his biggest goof was to come out and say the replacements would be black. Doesn't matter if they were gonna be black, white, grey, yellow or green; you can't just come out and SAY it. He's gonna lose on this one.

I agree with this. Im in no way a racist, but think about the NAACP, what would happen if there was a national association for the advancement of white people, it would be branded the KKK. Something that makes me very mad is the mention of reparations for slavery. Yes all slavery is inhumane and sad, but throughout history, slavery was based on social class and color color. Im sure somewhere along the lines my family was enslaved, so does that mean I am entitled to reparations for something that happened to my ancestors?

If he was a white sheriff who just ousted a bunch of black officers and said that he was going to replace them with whites, they wouldn't be talking about making him hire back the black officers, he would have already been fired.

But since he's black, it's only a minor problem.

If any of these organizations were run by whites (for whites) they would have been branded unconstitutional and been dissolved.

The really funny thing about slavery...the Europeans (and latter the Americans) purchased slaves from black Africans in trade for guns for more efficient tribal wars.

Well, these awards and organizations were formed mostly because
mainstream intstitutions didn't allow Afro-American participation or would
not give recognition to contributions made to this society by Afro-Americans
or any other people of color.

You know what is SAD,

"we" normally call this, racism. I like your comment though.

I would prefer to be proud of my own accomplishments, not something that someone of similar skin color has done some number of decades ago. I can look at someone like Nikola Tesla and say wow, he was awesome, but I would not try and call that my own "pride." I can see not being ashamed of your heritage, but calling it pride I just dont see eye to eye with. Since I live in close proximity to a lot of "mexican people," some friends and I discuss this from time to time. One of them speaks a little Nahutal, and can tell you various historical facts about various regions of the Latin Americas.

Many of those who claim pride, can't tell you what they are proud of, other than skin color, or some sloganized statement that they have heard. Some people are proud to speak spanish, yet they can't often tell you much about how life was like before their land was raped by the Spaniards, because typically there is not a large amount of interest in historical studies beyond propoganda.
