Has anyone here had the "fortune" to be in a tornado?
What were your experiences with it?

My buddy and I were outside riding our skateboards. We were both 13 at the time. We watched what we thought at the time was just a dust devil cut across the field, but in fact it was a tornado that had not totally touched down. Well, it finally did touch down about a half mile down the road and demolished a local dry cleaning establishment.
Why do I have the feeling he calls his thingy "tornado"?![]()
I've seen one on TV....does that count?![]()

I was just wondering people's experiences in tornadoes - the ones with a "lot of wind"...![]()

I agree. I would much rather know something is coming so you have some kind of warning. I'd rather shovel snow than deal with the destruction of a hurricane, tornado, flood, earthquake, etc.
And I like the four seasons.

I never knew it was possible for even grass to be so destroyed. The area I saw if a person was caught there was no way you would survive the destruction was so complete and thorough. And then there were things totally untouched in the very same area.
We are told by those in the know that if one comes to seek shelter in a low lying area if you are outside for example. The destruction even of low-lying areas you'd think would offer some safety was unbelieveable. Words really can not describe it you'd have to see it for yourself in person.
I wonder how anyone enjoys living in Tornado Alley. I guess people there must like having everything they own rearranged or totally removed from time to time - kinda like some women who like to change things completely when they get tired of "the same old thing" maybe... I do think I would rather have a Woman do the rearranging though. At least there is some possibility of "surviving"?![]()

No, not at all. I used to think I understood from accounts and viewing on tv but it is NOTHING even remotely close to SEEING FOR YOURSELF! If you actually see what one does IN PERSON you are at a loss for words to describe it. TV - even high definition - could not come even close to adequately describing...

There was one that came through this area in 1985, part of a group of them that were especially violent - something we almost never see here.
There was an account of a woman and her children running to the basement of their house to seek shelter and the tornado took the entire house away shortly after then ran downstairs and even chased them around in the basement running from their washer and dryer that was chasing them in circles. They survived just fine but I guess they really had to do a lot of running...

Around 8:00pm one night about 3 years ago I was standing outside of my front door admiring a thunderstorm. After about 5 minutes of standing there the power suddenly went out,and I was standing in complete darkness, and an umbrella I was holding suddenly flew out from my grasp. I was about 40 feet from my front door and I took off sprinting only to hear a deafing roar coming towards me(remember it was complety dark). I lived on a farm and we had an enormous barn about 400 feet from our house and I could hear it just getting destroyed as I was heading for the door. I quickly entered the basement and stayed there for the night. In the morning the entire farm was just wrecked to pieces, and the house had suffered some damage. After some closer inspection over the next week I found out that about 3 tornados had blown through our property at the same time(and to think I was standing outside as this tornado was coming towards me)
Maybe it's just me, but when someone writes in bold letters like this I imagine it being said almost screaming, like this person was talking over a big crowd or something.Originally Posted by The__wenger

My home town of Andover_Kansas was pretty much wiped off the face of the map in 1991.
I really am struggeling to find words that could adequately describe how fucked up this whole experience was. Suffice it to say, it was bad. Very bad.

I didn't know it cost anything to be in a tornado, who do you give your "fortune" to to get the ticket to ride?Originally Posted by John H.

no sign of despair in their hair, nor their hearts

Sorry about the bold letters. I wasn't paying much attention when I was writing. I've noticed that when I tell the story I tend to yell.
