Jenna Jameson autobiography LOCKED-AWAY at public library

Porn queen Jenna Jameson calls her autobiography a "cautionary tale," and Mayor Bill White is taking precautions about making it available to Houston library patrons.

White recently ordered that the library's dozen copies of Jameson's best-selling How to Make Love Like a Porn Star: A Cautionary Tale be removed from open shelves.

In making his decision, White sidestepped the committee process that Houston's libraries typically use to evaluate complaints about items in their collections.

"We're trying to take action quickly, and we didn't see a need to go through a long bureaucratic process," said White's spokesman, Frank Michel.

The mayor decreed that the books, which once were on prominent best seller displays at the central library and 11 branches, be locked in the closed stacks of Houston's central library downtown. Patrons must ask to view or check out the book, which contains Jameson's lurid confessions and a few of her nude photos.

Sandra Fernandez, a spokeswoman for the Houston Public Library, said all copies of Jameson's book now are checked out, and more than 20 people are on a waiting list for the book.

Michel said the mayor got involved because Councilwoman Pam Holm asked him to, and it didn't necessarily mean that White will take direct action on future complaints about library books.

Beverley Becker, associate director for the office of intellectual freedom for the Chicago-based American Library Association, said White should have let Houston's library system handle the matter.

"We absolutely strongly encourage libraries to always follow their procedures, regardless of who's complaining," Becker said. "The very reason libraries have a policy in the first place is to make sure decisions are made very carefully, and not based on the whims of one person. That ensures that the operation is smooth and fair and nobody's rights are trampled on."

"We do get calls every once in a while about a county commissioner or mayor making a decision about a book," Becker added. "But it's usually in a smaller city. I can't think of any city the size of Houston where the mayor has gotten involved."

Holm, who asked White to take action earlier this month after seeing the book on prominent display at a branch in her west Houston district, wasn't sure the mayor went far enough because the book still is available to children.

"My whole purpose for putting it behind (the closed stacks) is to limit it from children," said Holm, a former schoolteacher.

Fernandez said the library has no restrictions on what books children can check out, though it restricts their Internet use.

Holm said she has asked the library to come up with a policy on which books should be restricted from children and not prominently displayed. She said she hopes to have a report next month.

Michel said White issued his order after consulting with Holm and Toni Lambert, interim director of the Houston Public Library.

Lambert declined to be interviewed, but said in a written statement that she agreed with White's recommendation.

"It was a reasonable solution to providing the book to customers while addressing the concerns raised," she wrote.

Fernandez said items typically are relegated to the closed stacks not out of concern for prurient interest, but for lack of interest.

"The closed stacks are for stuff like old copies of magazines, Census Bureau documents and other government documents that don't have high circulation," Fernandez said. "It's my understanding that the appropriateness of a book is not what we use the closed stacks for."

Holm said she only wanted to restrict the prominent display of new books acquired by the library that are deemed offensive, and acknowledged that many books now on open shelves contain graphic photos or language.

In Houston's central library, for example, a visitor can read Going All the Way: Teenage Girls' Tales of Sex, Romance and Pregnancy, or contemplate photographer Sally Mann's images of rotting, naked corpses.

Holm said she could not comment on whether the library system should have used its typical committee system in responding to her complaint, because she did not know there was such a process.

Fernandez said committees typically are composed of a few library employees who evaluate the appropriateness of a book according to written guidelines.

Fernandez said that since 1994, the library system has removed two items from its collections.

One was a video collection of 1930s cartoons that was deemed racist, and another was a non-peer reviewed journal that claimed the Holocaust was a hoax.

The library system received 23 complaints about inappropriate books last year, the highest figure in 10 years, she said.

    Hi Butterfly,

I am against children having any access to things inappropirate for them. Children and childhood is sacred.

Of course we are speaking about a book children should never have access to. And would not.

I am also against censorship. Everyone has the right to not view what they do not want to see or look at but they do not have that right to prevent others - who are adults and / or are of age and ability of consent and give that consent freely - who have an interest in whatever.

A public library is just that public - and FOR everyone. And they do know how to go about making things available - or not - to all people who walk through their doors.

Anyone could just as easily walk into a library and find something religious "objectionable" and want it "banned" or removed from "sight". Where does this kind of thing stop?

Libraries are for EVERYONE. Something inappropriate for CHILDREN must always be not available to them but to those "able" no one has any "right" to prevent their free access.

The mayor should stick to his job and let the library do its work. The library is not his relm. He could express his views as anyone else can but ultimately it is the library's call and they know how to handle this appropriately. And they do.

Children that DO go into libraries are not interested in going in the autobiographical section anyway

Lets start burning some books too, and follow a leader with portraits of himself hanging everywhere. Then there is 2 options, invade poland or communism.

    Hi Dale,

I always quote entirely what someone writes when I am responding - that way people know what it is I am saying accurately.

As to the Pornstars, I imagine some actually do make love hoenstly speaking. I have not doubt about that. The only difference is they choose to make it "visually" available for others to see - and "enjoy" - and "learn" - as well. I see nothing at all wrong with that.

You're way behind the timeline. We've already moved past the invasion part.

    Hi JJJ,

Certainly the burning of books has happened in the past. And I am sure if you allow "those 'in charge' (by THEIR definition)" they WOULD in a heartbeat.

Libraries are FOR EVERYONE. And should always reflect and have EVERY THING. The availability is and always must be with the "ability" of that person in mind.

this is kinda funny because any 12 yr old can go to the library and check out a stack of romance novels. these books usually have the big hot guy "taking" the innocent maiden... at first she resists um by todays standards a lot of what happens in these books would be called rape. there is some pretty steamy porn in there disguised as romance. his "throbbing manhood" her "silken love sheath" the "moist haven of her mouth" yep dressed up porn. (Storm Maiden is really good um it has vikings... nice one's that like to give oral to a lovely kidnapped victims... ) it's pretty much a given you'll be in a right state several times before you finish a "romance" novel and they are not at all secured or restricted. i doubt Ms. Jameson's book will have anyone in a lather.
a lot of the bs like this is so stupid. a 12 yr old can't buy smokes but the can run down to the pharmacy n pick up their parent's oxycontin, valium, vicodin.... that's just wrong.

I've wondered about this myself... my 17yo son picked up my mom's meds the other day no questions asked... and it was a scheduled drug, too.

The first part is kinda tough nowadays, because in the internet age, the library is definitely not a place where kids go anymore, therefore all a kid hasta do is log onto AOL and in 5 seconds has access to infinite porn.

as for your 2nd part, i totally agree.

    Hi Flex,

Children IF THEY REALLY WANT TO are GOING to GET what they want no matter what anyone trys to do to prevent it. But the Library does have an obligation to do their best to see that "things" are available to appropriate age groups. And they do their best. Hopefully children will be taugh by those that care about them truly in such a way they will not even want to "go there" (that is until it is the proper time in their lives).

If this fine example of American literature were to have been in the libraries I went to as a 13 year old ... without controlled access ... this book and I would have spent most of the time in the restroom. I would imagine young males all over America are finding themselves in the library for the very first time because of this novel hitting their shelves ... very inspirational.

We had a copy of the Kama Sutra in our home library when I was 10 it was always viewed as an art piece on being a better lover, not as porn. I guess some people think anything that deals with sex is porn, and they probably only fuck with the lights off and their socks on.
Coarse edged youth, the irish pendants string from their smiles
not yet plucked as to slacken the seams
and drag down the features of age,
no folds or creases from unkempt wear
    eyes of tranquilty, crystalline-beads
no sign of despair in their hair, nor their hearts
but oh they have yet to be experienced and that makes aging so very worth it...ML circa2012

Unwilling to wed the man her Irish chieftain father has chosen, Fiona of Dunsheauuna hatches a plan. In the castle's dungeon is a captured Viking warrior. If she can heal him and then seduce him,(gee this sounds familiar ) her fate would be altered.

In his feverish mind, Dag Thorsson believes she is a fairy princess come to tend him and perhaps lead the way to Valhalla. When his brother raids the town in order to free Dag, he takes the healing "fairy" captive. Though Fiona is Dag's prisoner, he becomes her protector on the long journey to his homeland. Though Dag's slave, Fiona is accorded certain small kindnesses that confuse her. She discovers that Dag is capable of kindness and gentleness. In a strange land she discovers courage and passion beyond her dreams.

    Hi Bone,

The thing is no matter who or where Guys - and Gals - are GOING to find what it is they are after PERIOD. I don't care what people try to do there is no way to really stop "hormones" when the time is "right" "for them".

Teaching your children the VERY BEST you can without being a "control freek" or "religious zealot" - being down-to-earth and honest and sincere with them, encouraging them in proper ways, showing sincere interest in them but not getting "in their way", allowing them to BE who they are, respecting and honoring their individuality, establishing foundations, knowing limits and limitation, BEING a parent ... - and having open communication between you and them ON ANYTHING no matter what and them KNOWING you REALLY LOVE THEM (NOT that they can "get away with anything) is the best way to go. And the best "prevention" on anything.

And you (meaning anyone here) can not expect "others" to be their "police" or "parents". There is an old saying that I always go by: "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" - it works so many ways all the time and is damn good advice. Never try to "hide" sex as so many try to do thinking that if they do not know about it they will not "be interested". And Sex is NOT "dirty". There are some who can cause it to be viewed as such because of their actions and their disrespect for others and using of others... Sex in and of itself is sacred and beautiful. It is a real honor to have relations with those you truly care about and them you. Honor, understand, know, celebrate Sexuality which is a very basic and truly wonderful thing in life and living and humanity WHEN EACH PERSON truly cares about each other.

    Take Care, John H.

this is ridiculous, and just another way that our country has gone to shit. guess what, something on the planet is always going to be objectional or offensive to someone, always!! Anyone who has written a letter of complaint would you please just put a bullet in your head and save us all the trouble. First off, this book is like 600+ pages, no kid is just gonna stop by and read it. And second, why can't Jenna tell her story like everyone else without it being subject to concealment censorsihp? Everyone who supports this type of censorship please just kiss my ass. hey don't like it, guess what,... DON'T READ IT, don't want your kids seeing it, DON'T LET THEM, and if they do, thats just how life goes, if you do your god damm jobs as parents then there would be nothing to worry about. If there is one lesson that you could learn from her past that is detailed in her book, its that a strong loving family is VITAL to a child growing up and living a normal life. She has been a victim of abandonment, trauma, and chaos, and abuse her entire life, ALL of which stem from her family experience and progresses outwards. These are the things that lead to a childs downfall, not a little violence on TV or accidently catching a glimpse of a tit before their 18th B-day. Bottom LINE: Either do your job as parents, or at least concentrate on fuccing up just your own kids lives and leave the real decisions to the normal sane people in the middle..

    Isn't that the TRUTH!!!
When were you transferring to Harvard again?

I work at a h.s.. I only graduated from this same h.s. 5 years ago, and it AMAZES me how much things, mostly hs aged kids, have changed.
People WONDER why their kids are irresponsible, lazy and disrespectful to say the least? CHECK OUT THEIR FUCKIN PARENTING!

BUT NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Parents are too busy complaining about everything and blaming everyone else for their kids fuckups. It's not too hard people, look in the mirror.
You're a funny guy, Sully, I like you. Dat's why I'm going to kill you lahst.

yeah, we will see about that. It continually amazes me how little we as a society understand or prioritize the importance of abuse and the lasting affects on children. Why is it that we don't understand when a child has abandonment when young that child is going to have trouble forming intimate relationships and that they are doomed to recreat chaos that was experienced when young, or that abuse can cause a person to act out in any number of ways. Really when you think about it just all of our problems can be traced back and focused on, why is it that more people don't want to understand and learn about this. The world would obviously be a much better place if we all grasped a basic understanding of human nature so lets everyone pickup a book eh! lol
