    Sweet sweet justice

    I received this email today:

    Got to love it.

Hasta La Vista, Baby! (by an unknown soldier in Afghanistan)

Remember when Puerto Rico was raising heck about the US Navy using that nothing little island just off the coast of Puerto Rico for bombing practices, which they had used for the past 75 years? Demonstrations were held, Hollywood left wingers, Al Sharpton, and his fellow demagogues went down there to demonstrate to get the Navy out? I am sure it infuriated you just as it did me at the time. W-e-l-l-l, here is our revenge.

Always be careful what you ask for, you just may get it!

One of the many headaches that the U. S. has had was the Puerto Rican Island of Vieques. In the waning years of the Clinton Administration, protesters demanded that the US Navy abandon bombing and naval gun fire exercises that had taken place on the largely uninhabited island for nearly seventy years. Liberal icons bumped into one another to fly to Puerto Rico, boat over to the island, trespass (but never on a day that there was an exercise scheduled) and get arrested for the benefit of the New York Times or Newsweek. They included:

    Reverend Al Sharpton,

    Mrs. Jesse Jackson,

    Joan Baez,

    Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.,

    Edward Olmos,

    Michael Moore and

Ramsey Clark, just to name a few.

In 2002, the bombing exercises were transferred to an Air Force bombing range in central Florida, not far from the Jacksonville and Pensacola Naval Air Stations. In January, many of the protesters were back in Puerto Rico, celebrating the final bombing exercise on Vieques and waved Puerto Rican flags and placards that read, "U.S. Navy, get out of Puerto Rico."

The following February, Secretary of Defense, Rumsfeld,
announced that the U.S. Navy will close the Roosevelt Roads Naval Air
Station in Puerto Rico in 2004, eliminating 1200 civilian jobs as well as 700 military positions. This naval facility is estimated to have put nearly $300 million annually into the local economy.

The next day a stunned Governor, Sila Calderon, held a news
conference in San Juan, protesting the base closure as a serious blow to the Commonwealth's fragile economy. The governor stated that, "The people of Puerto Rico don't now nor never did have an interest in closing the Vieques bombing range or the Roosevelt Roads Naval Base. We are interested in both staying in Puerto Rico." (!)

When asked, the Commander-in Chief, Western Atlantic Command, said, "Without Vieques, I see no further need for the facility at Roosevelt Roads. None."

So, "Yanqui go home?" Fine. But we'll take our dollars with us. Hasta la vista, baby!

On February 21, the Secretary of Defense also announced that
starting this year, the U.S. European Command would begin moving most if not all of its active combat and support units from bases in Germany to others being established in Poland, The Czech Republic, Hungary and Turkey, to "better position them for rapid deployment to likely hot spots in those parts of the world."

Immediately the business and government leaders in the German states of Hesse, Rhineland and Wurttemburg, protested the loss of nearly $6 billion in revenue each year from the bases and manpower to be displaced. A spokesman for the Foreign Ministry speculated that the move may be, "...what the Americans call 'payback' for the actions of this government in opposing military action in Iraq."

" Does anyone know the German translation for "Hasta la vista, baby?" (Aufwiedersehen Shatzie)

Oh, ain't it nice to see a government with guts and a good
    memory!

GOD BLESS AMERICA and GOD BLESS GEORGE W. BUSH !

Great post, cfs3. Isn't that what the Germans call "shadenfruede", that is, when you can take pleasure in another's painful mistake.

Ha ha ha, stfu. The Germans will have the last laugh when we're scraping the bottoms of our oil barrels while they sit cozy in their solar powered homes with the 2 Hydrogen cars in the garage. And get ready for the wave of Puerto Ricans moving to the States.

Last laugh? Doubtful. The next laugh, hell no. Their unemployment is already over 10 percent. What do you think the loss of the US military bases will do?

Puerto Ricans moving to the States? They're already here. The base closed down at the beginning of '03. And the US economy is still going up. Go figure.

No, not really. He wanted the Navy out, so they're out. He got what he wanted, now the local economy sucks. What's he got to say about that?

I'm sure he blame it on Bush and the Republicans for starting it...

I was poking fun at his cognitive abilities (or lack thereof).

I'm sure he blamed it on Bush and the Republicans for starting it...

Whoops ... ... probably wanna be careful when you put down someone else's conginative abilities.

    Don't be mad cfs ...

Bush is still on my shit list. At the head as a matter of fact but I liked what was going on with base redeployments when it all came out. The Germans pose no threat now and fuck France so send the base funding to a more useful part of the planet ... someplace more timely. WWII is over I hear ... time to move on.

Here, I'll spare you a few commas: ,,,,,,,

There's no "whoops" about it. Sharpton jumped on the anti-US military bandwagon in Costa Rica and now the Costa Ricans are paying the price. The man didn't give much thought to the future ramifications. Probably because he didn't live there.

It's not about the Germans being a threat. They haven't been a threat to the sovereignty of the US since World War 2. It's that their current leader was re-elected on an anti-US campaign and the Germans bought into it. Spit on US, and we'll take our resources and money elsewhere. What's not to understand?

The French haven't been a real threat to anyone since Napoleon. Besides, who mentioned the French?

They've been closing bases since Clinton was in office. What did the people in some of our states do to deserve the closure of bases in their hometowns?

The base closure in Germany means a slightly slower response time to aid in French defenses ... fuck the French.

You seemed to miss the humor in mispelling your hack at Al Sharpton's mental abilities but I just thought it was funny and wanted to share the mirth. Thus the whoops.

Commas? I've no use for them generally cfs. Ease up and laugh more ... your hack on Sharpton was funny.

It's not so much to not protect the French, it's that the "hot spots" around the globe have changed since the Cold War. The French territory isn't that pivotal any more.

As for missing the purposeful misspellings...well...they kinda fit in with the not-so-purposeful misspellings.

Thanks for the kudos. Sorry about coming off harsh, but I come from a forum where the political debates were tough.

It was not a party issue anyway friends and neighbors. Fact is every Prez since Ronnie has had a piece in base closures. I think this is absolutlely the best idea BushCo has moved on since they went after the Tallybeenbanned. We WILL see more of our bases getting some heavy action from this move which equals more caskets. That I don't like. The free German vacation some of my friends have enjoyed will not be option and less people will feel as secure reducing enlistment. If the odds of being in the shit are increased the enlistment rate will fall. I like that.

What bases did Ronald Reagan close? Name some. Closing a base because a new one opens in its place doesn't count.

And yes, war means dead soldiers. But I guess your motto is "If it's too hard to do, it's not worth doing". The liberal slogan.

Peurto Rico is basically a welfare state anyway. Who do you think is really going to be paying for all those people out of work?

Your also going to be paying for the increased cost of the military using other practice bombing facilities, none of which are as good as the one at Viequez Island. Not having this facitlity available also lowered the training standards of the US Navy. But hey? It was a good way for any of these liberal mutts to get on a front page. Funny, but most "liberals" were backing their cause back when all this was going on, as, I suspect, many of you were.

    Reverend Al Sharpton,

    Mrs. Jesse Jackson,

    Joan Baez,

    Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.,

    Edward Olmos,

    Michael Moore

    Ramsey Clark
