I still got about an hour of downloading left, what is this?

Linux Windows I assume.
I had the earlier version of this program and I had an aweful time. Compatibility issues abounded and it was unstable, which it wasn't supposed to be.
Not thread crapping, just giving you my experience with it. I hope it works better now..

Just install a real linux distro, cause I bet that even if this ver. is free they'll charge for every little program and update to go with it or a subscription to their site for dl's.

I haven't tried it yet. Just got the freebie and passed it on. It is a legal download with full tech support though. Most likely a wide beta ...
My download started at 1400k the fell to 250k. Finished in 25 minutes or so.
Some info as I know it ...
Lindows is a windows emulator ran from a modified linux os. There are sure to be some issues, but this is a better version than previous releases. You do need to check this out for compatibility issues with your comp. The have a tremendous support site it seams, with a link for compatibility checks.
Don't expect this to be a full on replacement to windows, but if you're interested in seeing a marketable competitor to windows then get behind these guys. They are at the top of the food chain as far as the competition goes vs windows IMHO.
I'm downloading the Lindows Live to look at being able to run from cd on my box. Nice and mostly harmless compatibility check ...
Ya gotta be a lil' nerdy to mess with it ...![]()
Manic you are such a cynic ...![]()
No disrespect BC, but download a decent Linux distribution like Debian or Gentoo![]()

Get Linux and if you have problems track down your local LUG and have them fix it for you those guy's will do anything to make sure Linux wins in the end.

My local one is getting pretty large now and they've started charging for some classes, but I got to learn some awesome SSH and Linux terminal server stuff before I quit going.

I'm not sweatin' it Red. It's free so I had to look it over and pass it on. It seams to me these guys cleaned up their act from the last couple of releases and now are looking to get developers and the gp into the act for their next release.
Linux has a steep learning curve ... this one not so much.
The more I look at it the easier and more user friendly it appears. Most people who use windows will never even look at linux because it's not a cnr os. Lindows is (in theory) ... making it something easier than linux for the average Joe.
Here is their online walk through ... look it over before you thrash this os too much. I gotta warn ya it's like watching those clips from history class though.
I'll probably run it on a partition from my F drive for shits-n-grins. I'll update this thread as I mess with it. To me it looks like a viable alternative to windows.
Here's a link to their site with downloadable linspire compatable software. As Manic predicted you need to be a member at $50 a year.

Do you have to pay for the click n run service to update software?Originally Posted by BoneCrusher
Don't believe so but I'll get more to ya as I use it.
Good luck. Linux is an awesome OS.
This is my linux year. Hey I'm slow it takes me a while to pick stuff up. Already I'm not liking lindows though ...

Get a CD bootable Linux version with the NT_Pass tool then you can boot to a windows machine and hack the administrators password.

Why would you use anything other than windows? The only benefit I see is for security reasons.

But
OK linspire will not allow .exe files. This sucks.
What software are you using to run .exe files? WINE?
Have a 4 pc home lan. I put linspire live ... it allows you to run the os from cd ... and tried to look in C: and run an app. No dice ... won't allow an .exe fe yet mandrake will.
Not cool with that. Are these guys trying to be proprietary?
Sounds like a configuration issue of the emulator software. I've not used Linspire but I assume they're using Codeweavers software or something like WINE. Make a post on the Linspire forums, people will help you.
The learning curve can be steep, but stick with it. It's worth it in the end.
It was in the OS to not let it run .exe files on purpose. I got a message ".exe files are a Windows file extention. Linspire will not run these" when i tried to run one. I'll play around some with linspire but I think Manic is right and the developers of the OS are looking to cash in with their own reconfig'd version of linux. Not likin' that so much.
I'll be heading on to Mandrake soon. I will keep on with it just for the experience of learning linux.
Mandrake is an excellent distribution and one of the most user friendly. The main problem I have with Linspire is their habit of repackaging free applications and then charging for them. I'm obviously not against profit making, but that kind of practice goes against the core values of the open source community. If you invest a considerable amount of development time and create a unique application not distributed under the GPL there's no problem IMO.Originally Posted by BoneCrusher
Anway, you won't regret the move to Mandrake.
