    That magic number nine.
    Coarse edged youth, the irish pendants string from their smiles
    not yet plucked as to slacken the seams
    and drag down the features of age,
    no folds or creases from unkempt wear
    eyes of tranquilty, crystalline-beads
    no sign of despair in their hair, nor their hearts
    but oh they have yet to be experienced and that makes aging so very worth it...ML circa2012

    It's always 9.

    edit:

    If the number you pick is n, and the digits are a and b. Let the number we are looking for be x.

    n = 10a + b
    x = n - a - b
    replacing for n gives
    x = 10a + b - a - b
    x = 9a

    so the final number is 9 times the first digit. Note that the multiples of 9 are the same symbol each time the page is refreshed. And ppl think a math degree is useless

    I understand how it always comes out to 9, but how does the correct symbol always come up?

    That specific symbol repeats at the same iteration, and it changes each time you play the game.

    What is 87-15?

    What is 88-16?

    They always come to the same number in the series of numbers before them. So for the example, 87-15 and 88-16 both equal 72, as they will in all sequences. For the 60's it is 54 and the 50's it is 45, etc. So the program only need give 10 numbers the same symbol and change it each time you play.

    Where the 9 comes in is that the 2 digits of the number that is your answer always add to 9.
    If sense were common, everyone would have it.

    The symbol scheme changes every time so that every possible outcome has the same symbol. The symbols don't remain constant.
