How to burn (copy) DVD movies??

Anyone know how to burn copies of DVD movies? I have a DVD burner but the software that came with the computer won't let me burn copies of DVD's apparently there's some kind of copy protection, but I know people do somehow make copies. Anyone know of any free software?
