I think that you may have to reinstall windows. You probably erased files that Windows needed for startup......
That should do it.
It also depends on the Windows that you are using. You may be able to do a repair with the XP disk.....
Hopefully that will work....

Can you get the windows system disk from your friend? He should have it. Did you delete files from c:\windows\system? Did you look in the recycle bin? What type of errors are you getting?

If it is Me or XP. Start in safe mode, choose a restauration point then restart it.
What version of Windows were you running?
Regardless, here is a link that can give you some good info on Restoring your registry (All Windows Versions).
Now, depending on what you deleted, it is entirely possible a reformat may be in your future. It that is the case, you'll need to get yourself a copy of an Operating System to install it.
Good luck.

When I start the comp up it says in a DOS like mode
'Hit Del to run setup'
then if I dont do anything It will show the
'Searching for boot records from IDE-O..OK
Invalid system disk
Replace system disk and press any key'
I dont know what to do at that point
If I do hit Del and go to setup, I go to the setup menu, it reads
'Amibios Hiflex Setup Utility Version 1.20'
and gives me options from there.

Does anyone know where I can download Windows 98 or something?
Or a startup program?
Thanks

I don't think that's going to help. It sounds like he deleted files from the root of his system drive, maybe the MSDOS.SYS, COMMAND.COM, or MSDOS.---.Originally Posted by Vieope
I've attached them in a zip file. Just place them at the root of your system drive. You will need a boot disk.

After Safe Mode, he goes to "System Restore". It might work if it is XP. If it is 98 you can install it again without formating it.

Or, if you just want to surf the Web, read emails, and write documents, Get a copy of Linux (I like the Fedora Core).

No it's not and Linux has a learning curve that would add more frustration to your deal here. DO you have another pc you can download with?
Yes I can download anything to this comp then to my MP3 then to that comp
or to a disk then that comp

Get the distro from http://www.linux.org/dist and borrow a copy of Linux for Dummies from the library.
Again, if all you want to do is surf the web, read email, and create documents then moving to Linux is a no hassle affair. Click on the Internet icon and surf the Web. Click on the Email icon and get your email (you will need to set up and account). Click on the Office Document icon and create a text document.
It's not hard at all. Not to mention that it's also free and legal.

You rerally think Linux is something he should jump into on his primary home comp? Not being sarcastic cfs ... I'm serious. Linux is not going to solve his woes when he tries to play Far Cry or run an app he is used to dealing with in windows. SF is not much of a nerd type either ...
No offense Spit ...
My thoughts were burst!, demonoid.com, and a new xp or W2000 download.

True, it won't play most Windows games (it will play some though). But like I said, if he only wants web, email, and word processing, the Linux would do just fine. He'll miss out on all of the really neat viruses, but I think he'll manage.Originally Posted by BoneCrusher

Another good side benefit is that he wont be so tempted to play games and can be more productive at school.

On a non-related note BoneCrusher, go to http://www.google.com and type in filetype:torrent and say...pulp fiction and see what you get.Originally Posted by BoneCrusher

Ya lost me there bud. Doing a google for pulp fiction relates to this in what way?
I agree that Linux is good stuff. Just not sure it is for someone that is not much into computers.
I'm thinking he needs the short term fix ... replace his OS and go on with life.
