Assuming that you mean what makes a successful pro bodybuilder I would have to choose genetics if I could only choose one, otherwise it would be all of the above.

Homer: Hey! I saved your life! That egg sandwich could have killed you by cholesterol.
Lenny: Pfft, forget it, Homer. While it has been established that eggs contain cholesterol, it has not yet been proven conclusively that they actually raise the level of serum cholesterol in the human
blood stream.

Hi Sweatshopchamp,

Truthfully, there is only one answer because it is the BASIS for all else - diet and nutrition. Just as an automobile can not run without fuel so too is this true of the Human body. You can not "build" your body without the BASICS. PERIOD. All else you list follows but is just as important. The only thing I would say you list - genetics - is not a requirement but it sure can help though depending on a person's goals.

I would put those you list in this order of importance:

1) Diet / nutrition. Without the fuel that is proper you can not accomplish anything and you'd be wasting your time. Proper rest is also a very basic requirement.

2) Work ethic. If you are not going to stick with it you will not succeed. You should never go into something "half way" or "part way".

3) Mental focus / attitude. You MUST focus on what you are doing and how you do it with EACH exercise. To do otherwise you are cheating yourself and wasting your time and effort. Your attitude should be FOREMOST that you are GOING TO DO THE JOB RIGHT EVERY TIME WITH PERFECT FORM. Because that IS how you will succeed.

4) Training. Unless you do - train - and PROPERLY you will get no where.

5) Genetics. This can help expecially if you are after a certain "look" or "totality" about you. But ANYONE CAN SUCCEED in Bodybuilding - GUARANTEED - if they DO everything that involves numbers 1 through 4 above. And not much in life is really GUARANTEED.

Take Care, John H.

John,

sorry to say, you can have all the focus, diet and work ethic in the world, but you AINT a BB unless you're in the gym training, regardless of whether you train exactly proper or not.

Lot's of people eat healthy and aren't even close to being bodybuilders. Diet doesn't make a bodybuilder.

My answer was work ethic. If your goal is to be a bodybuilder, and your work ethic is good, then you will undergo the necessary steps to reach your goal. This includes diet, training, and focus. That's really the whole concept of work ethic - being dedicated to whatever it takes to complete your goals.

This whole thread is a pissing match. You need all of the mentioned qualities to become one, without even ONE of those, youll never be successful.

Except maybe genetics. Gear can help you past that.

Hi Flex,

Go back and re-read what I said. In the order I listed those things IS the ONLY WAY someone can BECOME a Bodybuilder. AND SUCCEED. You or anyone else can lift til your blue in the face but without proper nutrition and proper diet, proper rest, you will not end up with much and certainly you can "go for awhile" but without "gas" (the fuel that is PROPER) you will fail.

It's a combination of Diet/Nutrition, Training, Genetics, Work ethic, and Mental Focus/attitude.

Obviously if your diet is perfect and you do not train with some form of progressive overload I doubt you will get very far, and vice versa you can train perfectly but if you eat Taco Bell every day you wil not get very far.

I still say that genetics is #1.

All of them make a bodybuilder but I think the most important is mental focus and attitude towards bodybuilding.
