When did FORUMS suddenly become so popular?

Seems like they've been the craze for the last 4 or 5 years....At least that's when I started to notice them and get involved with a few. Had they been around much longer than that?

Seems like there is an active forum for pretty much everything these days...

they have been around for a long time and they have kinda devloped from chat rooms, the good things about forums is you can write stuff on a web page basicly, first one i sued was an ict forum where i could get and give all the advise possible with peoples problems and quesitons on computers, then when i ran a gaming clan we needed a forum to announce matches, post players and times and so members could let us know if they couldnt play. i dont really use them because of a craze but they are very handy and this one is one of the best forums ive seen used

I remember being on L'hotel Chat in 1996 which was a pretty big chat room. Then they started to charge and I went to some other dump.

Don't be jealous because I've been online chatting with babes all day.

4-5 years ago forums were still somewhat infantile, so yes they have been gaining in popularity for about that long. Some of the forums had really mundane thread layouts compared to this, pretty much HTML with no graphics, and crappy navigation.

Go back further Mudge, think 'BBS'.
So many cries of inequality stem from one of group
of people doing little or nothing and then bitching
about another group that actually does something
    to improve their lives.

Which pre-dated the internet, even though websites often called themselves BBS still into the early days.
