    The Contender

Did anyone watch premier of "the Contender," the NBC reality boxing series. If so, what did you think about it? Personally, I'm so sick of all the reality shows coming out nowadays, but I didn't find this one too bad.

I didn't catch the show but I just found out that one of those guy's lives right down the block from me,it doesn't look like one of stupid reality shows cause I cant stand those things, this one look's like it actually has a little substance to it.

I heard Stallone talking about that.
Coarse edged youth, the irish pendants string from their smiles

The show's a pretty cool idea. Not to mention these guys are going to fight like it means something to them.

    First ep. was good.

I heard the producers from the ultimate fighter put a $5 million dollar bet that their fighting champ would take the contenders.

These fights are actually sanctioned and count against their records. If these bouts are actually real, the producers couldn't ask for a bigger Rocky-style upset! That young Mexican kid fought a great fight.

The black dude that was seemingly the leader of the East team got booted. Supposedly he was the most experienced of the East team.

    Great freaking show.

whoa ... easy on the black talk

This guy had a bad attitude coming into it. They played a clip where he thought he would roll into this comp and just ask for the money, meaning he thought he was all that and a bag of chips. Later, he saw that most of these guys were young, good and hungry. Guess he found out he wasn't all that.

Did he at least box well? In a way, I was hoping for him as he was the old guy hoping to make a comeback. I was living vicariously through him, now I just have to sit and stew about why I wasn't on there kicking a$$

I am not politically correct, heck you should have heard me talk about the Spick (I am Spick ya'll, so chill out...) that won last week.
I thought that this week, the "darker" skinned guy should have won based on his experience, however, he dissappointed.
Steve, I don't agree so much with you. I don't think that Reid (I think I just remembered his name) boxed that well. He had a couple of good moments but the other guy took the fight to him and he was so overconfident that he got overwhelmed when the guy didn't go away after he hit him hard in the first round. He had a porous, if not poor defense because he was getting hit with punches that were somewhat wild, and an "experienced" fighter shouldn't be getting hit with those. Too over-confident.
Having said that, the other kid did hit Reid with some solid punches along with the wild ones, so it wasn't just wildness by the kid.....
All in all, a good show....

Man Steve, are you the only one I can talk boxing with here? Good fight this weekend, you have to watch it on pay per view if available. Erik Morales vs. Manny Pacquiao.
Did you catch the Barrera vs. Morales fight? Man, what a war.....

I can't wait to see what happened. I read up on the fight and it sounds as thought the black guy got hit with punches he shouldn't have (as you said). I just didn't like the attitude he came with. Unless you can backup such talk, you shouldn't be talking. Until Buster Douglas came around, as much as I hated it, Iron Mike was talking the talking and walking the walk. Our personal favorite, Roy did that too. Sugar Ray, although he didn't do a lot of talking, was able to back up the "bolo" punch with a victory in near most cases. It's just a very personal pet peeve of mine. It comes from the time I went back to boxing as the older fighter. Many of the young kids did just that ... I knocked out one fellow (headgear and large 15onc gloves). The other, I was just too quick for. After the fight I did nothing except smile and nod and hoping that they learnt some kind of lesson.

Dag I missed the premere? I'm planning on watching it. You boxing fans need to enlighten me on something though. I thought boxers couldn't be fighting that often. Every week seems like a lot when even the winners in this sport can get quite a bit of snot kicked out of them.

and that's why I respect you Steve, we think alike. I quit boxing a loooong time ago, but still play football once in a while and I had a younger kid yapping about how he was taller and was going to pancake me...He played O-Line and I played D-Tackle. First play, I ran at him and pushed him back enough to bother the other players. Second play I made believe I was going to push back and he went at me. I got out of the way and went by him as if I had nobody in front of me. Kept him off balance the whole game and he ended up buying me a couple of beers after the game at Hooters....Good kid. He just got taught a lesson on humility....

I'll tell you what, I'll be your heads up whenever a fight is coming. By the way, Arturo Gatti and Mayweather Jr. signed to fight on June 25th, I believe.....

Interesting thought ... I'm not sure what the amount of time is inbetween fights, but every state has it's own boxing commission that determines how often a fighter can fight.

If you're not getting kicked around every fight, you can fight as often as you can. Mike Tyson was fighting every three weeks.

I wonder how much production cost.. the gym, living quarters, putting their families up in houses, etc.... everything is top-notch. must have cost a pretty penny.

I like Pacquiao. The first Manny fight I ever watched he just banged out with the other dude. I wish I remember who it was. I believe it was nominated for fight of the year of 03 or 04. Unbelievable fight though. Looking forward to the 19th.

I hope Gatti handles Mayweather too......
