    They are banning smoking...

Finally, bars and restaurants in Philly will have to be smoke free as long as this bill passes in a couple weeks. Thank Christ.
If sense were common, everyone would have it.

We've had that here in CT for a while now, it makes a HUGE difference.

Bar owners are still fighting it though.

I'm biased as non-smoker. ALthough I would love that; I could see how it would hurt business.

We introduced a total ban on smoking in any workplace and its been a great suuccess.Im a non-smoker so I benefited from it.People who work in bars and pubs and restaurants all say its great and everyone notices the difference. So far this year over 7,000 more people have quit smoking than last year and businesses are still doing well, although bars are a little down but thats attributed to the fact prices in bars are a total rip off.Itll save the government a fortune in the long run through less expenditure on health services aswel, its hoped.Id definitely recommend it!!!

I don't see how its bad for bar and restaurant business.

Every time I go into one, its a wait for the non-smoking section but they can seat you right away in smoking.

Proven fact its bad for business. There have been a shitload of studies and reports, all showing a decrease in revenue due to the law.

Of course, they are general, as every rest/bar will be different, but the general trend is a loss in revenue.

There is an initial dip, but it eventually goes back up. Vermont and Florida did it, both places where I have lived and the impact was negligible to places I would frequent. Shitty little dive bars that alcoholics go to everyday in order to smoke, drink, and bitch about their wives get hit hard. IMO, it wouldn't hurt them to spend a couple days a week at home not drinking.

    Word to that!

Here in Ottawa, the law was passed some time ago, and while at first, bar owners said business diminished, it quickly went right back up and losses were quite insignificant. I am an ex smoker and have a severe case of "ex smoker syndrome" (mental illness causing a being to bitch and moan about smokers...Some call it being a female!) and I am very pleased with these laws!

I love the fact that restaurants and office buildings are now smoke free zones.....

On a funny note, I was in Disney World a couple of weeks ago. There are designated smoking areas there. There was a man smoking but wasn't in one of the smoking areas. What did I do? I asked the guy if he minded if I farted. I said I had major gas from a bowl of Chili that I ate earlier in the day and that I was really reaking. Of course, the guy looked at me as if I was crazy (I made sure I also looked menacing so that he wouldn't have any thoughts...). I then told him: "you are smoking here, I figured if I have to smell that shit that you are smoking (I really said garbage, but I thought shit would sound funny for the purposes of my story), then you shouldn't mind smelling what I fart."
Needless to say, the guy started laughing, put out the cigarrette, put it away and said to me: "that's the most original thing I've heard, I'll go over there...." and pointed at the smoking area.....
I laughed with him, thanked him and continued on with my day......

I hate cigarrettes. I will fart next to you if you are smoking next to me, that simple, and I assure you folks, you don't want that....

Rhode Island just went smoke-free March 1st. The more states that enact that law, the better it will be.

With waiters and waitresses getting lung cancer from second hand smoke, and me not having to breathe it here in California, I could give two shits if someone wants to save their $10 and go smoke outside eating a sandwhich from some other joint.

As Crazy said, in Ontario smoking has been banned from public areas for quite some time now. I like the thought of that as I dont smoke, but my mom and b/f both smoke without a end in sight.. mom keeps saying she is quitting, but still asks me to get some for her when she doesnt have time.
I feel as if our government is contradicting itself... they are phasing out cigarette smoking, and trying to decriminalize marijuana, kinda funny.. I guess there would be many benefits to it becoming legal, better way to tax.. people that use it for illnes problems will not have a hard time getting a hold of it, and people can smoke it without worrying whether the police will show up and bust ya lol. I dont see the difference between pot and alcohol, well yes, I do, alcohol makes you way more fucked than pot, but thats just my experiences.
Anyway, back to the topic at hand.. Ontario is legally smoke free, although the previous inhailations will always effect me, fucking smokers.

They are trying to do this here. Restraunts, and most other buildings are smoke free already. I really dont care about the bars.. I mean they are PRIVATE clubs. This is just another right down the drain. I dont go to the bar either way, because I dont drink. If a waiter doesnt want to work in a smoky bar, get another fuccin job!

Not to start a political debate here, but it always amazes me how people who generally believe that people should have the right to do whatever they wish seems to lose that prespective when it comes to smoking.

Smoking is nasty, but the way society tees off on smokers would not be tolerated if aimed at just about any other group.

Exactly, not to mention a bar is a private club. No one is forced to go, or work there. People choose to(work), because of the good money in being a bartender/waiter. And we all know why they go. Smoke/drink/pick up ass.

People can do whatever they want as long as it's not effecting others or making other unsafe.

It's prevention, just because they choose to work their doesn't mean we should pay all of the healthcare bills and rising prices when they fall ill from the years of inhaling second-hand smoke, not to mention the lawsuits against their former employer, etc. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
