    Advice needed from STRONG MINDS

If there is one thing I despise its people who threaten to mess with your life in a serious way and that has happened to me today and I would like to hear some opinions.

    The scenario

3/5 of my way through 5 yr Phd in theoretical physics.

Making new life in US after coming here from the UK - hopefully for good as I cannot stand the UK and am loving my new life here.

Have plans to marry girl soon from here.

    Have good reputation in department.

    The problem

Attend a required meagre 'make hours' class called colloqium where you have to give one talk on your subject per semester and attendance is required for all other speakers throughout the year.

I missed ONE class last week and asked another grad student to sign in for me. That is ALL I've missed in THREE YEARS!

You are allowed to miss ONE class anyway per semester.

Two or three weeks my buddy has signed for me whilst I've been there - just because he has been sitting next to me and I have told him JUST WRITE MY NAME FOR ME beacuse it was quicker as he had the pen. I was fu**** there but you know - your buddy has the pen and and doesnt seem that big a deal and you save a couple of seconds.

    THE BIG PROBLEM

The Prof. for the class has been looking at the signatures and is accusing me of missing 5 classes as the signatures do not match and is threatening to kick me out of grad school for disobeying the honour code!

THATS FUC*ed. I have come here and started from scratch to make a new life and this dic* is trying to ruin it all.
I have a potential PHD - wife and LIFE over here and this DIC* wants to take it all from me.

He has these 'signatures' to prove I wasn't there and is trying to prove that I have been ripping off the class but thats completely false. I did nothing more than:
    i) Miss the allowed number of classes
ii) Had someone sign for me during the missed class

    How should I play this?

I have dealt with people like this. Can't stand it. They are just egomaniacal bastards.

I say your best bet is to get your buddy who signed in for you to make a statement (written and verbal) as to the validity of your claim. Explain that you did miss one class and asked another student to sign in for you (you may be able to get him to attest to that but I don't know what the punishment would be for his actions). DO NOT TRY TO HIDE IT. Admit that you were wrong and explain why you did it/won't do it again. It's like being a child who stole a cookie.

If that doesn't work maybe try begging?
Life is not a bitch. Life is a beautiful women. You just call her a bitch because she won't give you that sweet pussy.

I dont know how you are going to explain, and have them believe, that you were so lazy that you would not spend 2 seconds to scribble your own signature. Nobody signs my name for me, ever. Thats asking for bad mojo.

    Good luck though.

I mean, the best case scenario is that you act honest and humble. Try and have a grown up talk with the guy. Definitely talk to your friend and make sure he'll back you up as him having written your signature even though you were there. I'm sure other people in the class would probably have seen you as well.

Its not going to help to threaten to whoop the guys ass I dont think, so dont get aggressive with him. Ah well, I hope it all works out. I'd definitely be doing my own signatures from now on though.

    Hi Luke,

I agree with you. If he can not talk to this "man in charge" he needs to speak to the dean. Maybe even the Regents.

I can understand why the school would want each person to sign in themselves. I wonder if they have a camera in that room that could prove his attendence.

First, tell him exactly what happened.

Then, why not PROVE you were there. Show him your notes of the classes he says you "missed", or talk a little about what the people presented the days you "missed".
Be honest with the guy and you should be okay.

Worse comes to worse, give me $50 and problem solved.

You have to teach this theoretical physics professor some practical physics.

Unless they are the kind of person that reads that as admittance of guilt, because you aren't staunchly defending yourself. Have to play that one by ear, unless you are always a certain way out of principle.

I dont know, I've found it to work in most cases where I keep my cool and try to speak to them rationally. I've found that when I flip my lid and get pissed off that I tend to accomplish a whole lot less. By all means he should defend himself, but he needs to keep his cool and not seem to the guy like he is attacking.

There is again a difference between defending and attacking, but - different people work differently. Sometimes a strong defensive attempt makes it look like they are guilty. Knowing what to do and when to do it, is the trick.

    Thanks for the advice guys.

I think that getting a signature from other people in the class backing me up that I Was there is a great idea.

I hate this sort of mess. People make such a big deal out of nothing sometimes!

i think that showing notes from those classes or going over what was discussed is a good idea also.

Well things seem to be getting better.

I wrote my prof. a long email explaining everything in gross detail and heard back this morning.

They have decided to reduce the penalty to a reduction in grade - no real big deal considering the alternative.

The only problem now is that they are threatening a harsher punishment for my friend who actually signed for me while I was away! Damn! Now I get off but get someone else into deep shite. (This guy is like a brother to me so this is not good)

    Hmmmmm!!!

Thanks again for the advice and support.

You should know that people will screw you if you screw with THEIR system.

60 seconds to actually think about the possible outcome before doing all of this would have saved you BOTH a lot of risk.

    Thanks mom.

Thats the sort of thing my mum would say - and thats yet another reason I have no desire to return to england.

The deed is done and I need to deal with the reality of how to handle the situation rather than sit here and think about how I could have done things differently.

But don't you wish you'd listened to your Mom in the first place?

Thats often the position I've found myself in... and it certainly doesnt hurt to learn from ones mistakes. Or do you think you havent dont anything wrong?

The latter. I don't think any wrong was done.

We are entitled to miss one class anyway with no penalty. Semester is over next week and I haven't missed any other class than that one and will not miss the final class next week.

All I did was sign for the one class I missed. But I was allowed to miss one anyway and either way it wouldn't not have made a difference to my grade.

Thus I have not violated the spirit of the honor code, only the bureaucracy.

And no I don't wish I'd listened to my mom (who doesn't know about this anyway!! I was just commenting that she sounds like her). If I'd listened to mom I would not have acheived one tenth of what I had. She plays things safe. I take more risks. She is unhappy and unsuccesful. I am happy and making myself a success.
