    Is tanning really worth it?

I have thought about doing tanning for 1 month just before summer begins. I was wondering if tanning is really worth the money for 1 month and does it really make you look better? Do you see more definition if you are tan? The only concern i have is the increased risk of skin cancer but whatever. I'm not like totally white but my skin reacts well to the sun and i get good color so for those who tan give me some feedback please.

How much would it cost for a month anyways?

Yes you see tons more definition.... but I still have my doubts when doing it... I could care less about skin cancer but the wrinkles and other mutations that may result are pretty frightening to me. I tan about once a week now and never more.

5 visits is usually around 20 dollars
I don't train hard, eat right, and do the things I do for others. I do it for myself.

....did I mention the ladies too???

Cost varies greatly on the equipment used, and depending on your skin type (ask them to type you if you dont know how yourself which I imagine you dont) it will take a varying length of time to actually pick up a tan.

There is a lot to be concerned about IMO when tanning, people who do so blindly might find themselves in a bad way. Either with prematurely aged skin, or a more serious problem like skin cancer.

if you tan properly you can actually lower you chances of skin cancer. While you can get cancer just from getting sun, getting burnt is much more damaging than just getting sun. So, if you use the tanning bed to work your way up w/o getting burnt, you will be better off than if you didn't and on the first sunny day you go out and get burnt as shit.

I just started tanning at a salon but only because I am going to Cancun June 4 and I do not want to get burned down there.

I just started going to this place. Supposed to be low UV and nice tans. Expensive as hell though. So far I like it, haven't burned and have a good tan.

I agree. There is no such thing as a healthy tan. Tanning is always destructive to tissue. However, there's something to be said for the psychological benefits of tanning. What's a little melanoma between friends anyway.

i just talked to the front desk at my gym and i found out they had a tanning bed. They also have a good deal that you can pay 40 dollars for 10 visits but it's generally for beginners meaning it's not as great as the real salon.

I'm thinking of doing the Mystic tan shower or airbrush tanning.

    Low UV, low tan

UVA/UVB are neccessary to get a tan. UVC is not found in a tanning lamp.

I hate to say it, but yes I do look way better tan. Aside from the muscle definition and looking thinner benefits, I think I am prettier tan.

Why do people kid themselves all the time? Do you honestly think exposing yourself to intense UV rays on a consistent basis is good for you?

Its much better to get burnt once a year than to tan every 2 weeks.

if you read any of the actual medical studies on the sun and how the body produces vitamin D3 you will see that no where do they recommend people to tan during peak sun hours (this is when 95% of people are tanning) for extended periods of time. Most people who tan naturally lay out for hours in the sun during peek sunlight hours the WORST time to be out in the sun. All of the experts recommend short peroids of tanning on non-peak sunlight hours from 10 am to 4 pm. Nobody tans in the early am or late afternoon.

you also have to take into account the geographical difference in areas and the variances in the levels of UVA, B and C rays. the sunlight in Maine is not the same as the sunlight in Arizona, etc.

if you read the studies they also state how getting sun burnt at an early age increases the odds of developing skin cancer. then you also have the fact that tanning causes pre-mature aging of the skin...etc, etc..

but the fact remains that skin cancer from exposue to the sun is on the rise and that is not debatable...

    YuP!

None of the articles say to tan. They all say to get sun exposure. Big difference.

Most of the articles I've read on skin cancer say 80% of the cases will happen from child hood sunburns or over exposure in childhood.

I make my daughter put SPF 50 on when she is outside. Living in AZ, you can not avoid the sun and expect to have any type of life. You learn to live with it and treat it with respect.

Uhuh. I actually saw some study conducted in Australia I believe. Comparing groups of people who are indoors all the time, to groups whose jobs or lifestyles put them outdoors in the sun all the time. The ones in the sun were far less likely to have cancer. I think alot of it is just small steps, and avoiding getting burnt.

Melanotan I think was prescription and I forget if its even legal at the moment or not. It also provided a "solution" of sorts for those with ED. I would be worried about toxicity though, but its been some time since I've read anything about it.

It takes a matter of a few minutes of minor sun exposure to get your vitamin D going, thats all.

FWIW, the wrinkles that show up in your 20s is from sun exposure as a child. So while the effect of damage is delayed, even typical exposure causes aging. Look at what it does to cars or anything left to sit, it rips it apart. Living tissue re-generation is not perfect, as we obviously continue to age and die, in part the sun is what starts this - oxygen actually does this too.

That said, I wish I had some more color

I've heard that safe products are in the works that will affect your melanin levels or whatever, without having been in the sun... I think it was still topical. Basicly your body would respond to it just as it responds to sunlight, end result being darker skin, without having to deal with the skin damage that extra sunlight causes.

My girlfriend bought some Jergens Natural Glow for me a few weeks ago. I actually noticed a difference 4 days after using it. It's a light tan so it isn't like you were pale yesterday and orange today it gradually builds up to a beige. The only problem is if you see it on the shelf at the store buy several because it'll be a while before you see more on the shelf, it's that popular.

That is what the latest spray on tans do, I heard of $25 a session and the recommendation of every 5 days - which makes it mad expensive.
