It's good to hear from you.
Hey everyone, thank you for the support and everything! I am currently at the Rehabilition Hospital of Indianapolis, it is supposedly the best in the Midwest, I have been here for 3 weeks today and from what I have seen they are exceptional.
I have my laptop and an exceptionally slow dialup connection here and have been online 3 or 4 times since I have been here to check my email and Kyle (roysecup) told me about this thread so I had to come and update.
Like Kyle said I was in a car accident and everything, my T10 shattered and my T9 was very badly dislocated (it was sticking out of my back on the way to the hospitals).
I was first taken to Ball Memorial Hospital and they decided it would be best to send me to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis where they operated on me as soon as I got there in order to minimize the time my T9 was compressing my spinal cord.
The operation went well, I got two 10in titanium rods (thickness of my pinky finger) along my spine with 12 titanium screws (2 per vertebra) attaching them to my vertebra.
I was at the Hospital for 3 days. The surgery was on a Sunday and on Wednesday they transported me to where I am now, the Rehabilition Hospital of Indianapolis. Its been about 3 1/2 weeks since the surgery and I am still in significant pain, the actual incision is healed but the muscles they cut through are not, yet.
This is a rehabilition hospital so I dont lay in bed all day, thank god! I have 4 to 5 hours of therapy each day and I can almost completely take care of myself now. I move myself from bed to wheelchair, etc easily by myself.
My tentative release date is June 30th, kind of ironic since that was the day I was supposed to report to the Air Force Academy.
Like Kyle said I have no feeling below my waist right now, however my spinal cord is still in whats called spinal shock, since my cord isnt 100% severed I should be feeling stuff, but my cord wont let me feel it because it still doesnt realize what happened completely. The doctors cant say when the shock will go away but it could be a few more weeks or a few months. Once that goes away I will know how much return I will get. They say you get most of your return back within 6 months. It has not been 1 month yet and I am starting to regain feeling below the level of my injury!
I am 100% confident that I will walk/run again. I have worked to hard in my life at many things to not walk again, everyday I tell myself that I will NOT be in a wheelchair for the rest of my life and I have many people surrounding me who believe the exact same thing. There are alternatives I have been researching if I am not able to regain feeling on my own. But I WILL walk/run again.
I will keep you all updating. Once again thank you all for your support. God bless.
-Jeff.

Remember that while you can't really build the muscle you want right now you can build that one between your ears. Bruce Lee was in traction for several month's and the doc's told him he would never be able to kick like he used. We know he came back kicking, but while he was in rehab he studied intensely and wrote scores of journals that he later had published in a book.

It's been two months since you've posted, Musclebeach.

The thing I'm concerned about is that Musclebeach has not been back to give us an update.

Whats up guys. I apologize for not responding either but I have had a few other things on my mind.
As of right now the lowest muscle that I have voluntary control of is my hip abb/abd. So I am in a wheelchair. I try not to let it hold me back (I can go up/down steps, up/down escalators, etc). I can now drive (using hand controls) and Im starting college here at Ball State in the spring semester, majoring in exercise science and minor in computer science.
In February and May Im going to Russia for this stem cell treatment they do. It sounds promising and quite a few people have gotten very good results from it.
I still do therapy. At therapy I wear these braces that keep my knee in the "locked" position and my ankles from "drooping" and I use a walker or arm crutches to walk. Its not functional for everyday life but it is supposed to promote muscle return (it will be big to do after the stem cell treatment in Russia). At home I have something called a glider (a lot like the gazelle thing on TV). So I can stand in it or "glide" in it. I try to glide about 45 minutes every other day (for some cardio so I dont get fat) and I stand everyday for 2 hours (I just stand there and watch tv while my family sits and watches). Its excellent for circulation/bone density.
I have of course continued to lift weights, to maintain upper body strength. Bench is probably one of the easier lifts to do, I move myself over to the bench and strap my legs to it and Im good. Its obviously a lot harder to stabilize myself on it but I still have gotten back up to 275.
I will try to keep you guys updated if you would like. Im also gonna try to start another online journal on here to keep track of my progress. I thank you all for your good wishes and prayers!!! It really means a lot!!!!
Thanks again,
-Jeff.

Jeff,
It is good to hear from you. I am sorry about your accident but I am impressed with your fortitude and determination. It speaks volumes about your character! Continue to work hard and make the best out of what the good Lord has given you! Life is about how you respond to challanges, obviously you have been challanged in a way that many of us will never know! Hello! It is great to hear from you and wonderful to see you still have that fighting spirit.
Please due continue to come back and keep us updated on your progress... And, if you do have the time or the will, a journal would be a wonderful way to see your improvements.
Good luck for the stem cells - my thoughts are with you.
