My wife and I are putting away about 15% of our total GROSS income. Combine that with the Air Force retirement check I get and we'll be in good shape. Gonna retire the instant our house is paid off. 55 +/- a couple of years.

15% of your pay over 300-400 years must yield a hefty sum.

Instead of answering this sarcastically I'm gonna say this instead...............

I wish it was only 4 years, but that's another 17 years from now.

I understand preparing for your future by building a nice nest egg is required. What I don't get is why everyone is in such a hurry to retire? I can't see myself ever retiring. Not because of financial reason but because I believe you stay mentally sharp the more you work. Also, I really enjoy my career.

I think travelling the world, going on cruises and volunteer work will keep my mentally sharp and feeling great. I'm not your average vacationer I like to hike, swim, camp etc....At least at 50 I'll have many years to enjoy doing this things whenever I want.

Fair enough I guess, but can't you do those things now? I take at least two long vacation a year with a couple smaller ones thrown in. Maybe I'm strange but I actually enjoy coming home from a long vacation. Those things always burn me out.

With my work schedule I'm way to busy and it won't ever happen. I'm lucky if I have the time to take a week off and i'm given 4 weeks vacation a year too

How much stuff do you try to cram into those two vacations? Maybe you're so worn out from trying to do it all in such a short time, THAT'S why you look forward to coming home. Me, I want to travel the world and enjoy myself. That includes doing everything in a RELAXING manner. Not too rushed. The sooner I get to start the better.

    P.S. to Jodi: You're short.

Without a doubt, I'm trying to get as much in as possible. I'm one who loves my routine. Without it I'm lost. I play two different sports in three different leagues, and I enjoy the hell out of it.

Traveling the world really doesn't appeal to me. Maybe checking a few other countries out would be cool, but I could only do that for so long before I got home sick.

Can you be more specific? Exactly what are you investing in?

Some people enjoy their occupations. I'm not out of college yet, but I hope the job I get would be one that I won't want to retire from.

More than likely though, I'd "retire" from my job and take some other job that doesn't pay much but that I'd really enjoy doing.
