Thread: Cat And A Ticket

In 1976 i had just got off work at 10:00 pm. I was a police officer for the CHP. I had just left work and was driving home down a long dark road in Chino, Calif where most of the area was farm land. While driving I felt the car feel like it had ran over something small. Now this area being farmland had no street lights. So I stopped my car. I grabbed my flashlight and look back a bit and saw what looked like a cat. I went over to the cat and sure a hellit was dead. Well being a peace officer you can't leave hurt or dead animals on the road if your the person who caused the incident. So I moved the cat over off the road and looked around and saw one house.
I walked over to the house and knocked on the door. A older lady answered the door. I explained that i was a peace officer and had just ran over a cat. she asked me what it looked like and i gave her a discription of the cat. About that time this little old lady just started screaming like crazy. I did my best to settle her down. So after a few min's i ask if there was anything i could do. She said that she would like to take it to one of those animal funeral homes. I told her fine. She theb asked that i give her the money for it. I ask that would be fine and started to give her $20. She said that wasn't enough that she would need around $500. I told her that was crazy and i'm not going to give her more then $20. About that time a chino Police officer happens to be driving by and stops. He ask what the problem was. I explained that i was a CHP and that the woman wanted $500 for a dead cat. He took me over to his car and explained that in Chino the law requires anyone who has unintentionally or purposely injured an animal on a public street is required to try fine the owner of such and pay the owner for there loss. I told him she wanted $500 and i offered her $20 and she refused. He explained that by law I would have to pay her any amount ask up to $1000. I told him That was bullshit and that I'm not paying. About that time he informed me if i refuse to pay her the settlement she ask that he would then arrest me a take me to jail on the spot. So after thinking about it i decided to pay her. I left the officer went to my car and got out my check book. I went over to the lady and wrote her a check for $500. I went back to the officer and told him done and that i had wrote her a check for the full amount.
Your not going to believe this. That officer then walked over to the old lady and wrote her a ticket.......Guess what law she broke?.... I need your answere and I'll give you the correct answere in a little while
