Schwarzenegger Cuts Ties With Competition
By DON THOMPSON, Associated Press Writer
Sat Jul 23,10:09 PM ET
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has cut business ties with an annual bodybuilding competition that bears his name, taking another step to distance himself from makers of nutritional supplements.
The governor was paid a fee each year to attend the bodybuilding event called the Arnold Classic, where dietary supplements are heavily promoted.
"That financial relationship is over," spokeswoman Margita Thompson said Saturday. "He wanted the people to know he's focusing on governing and didn't want this to be viewed as a distraction."
Thompson said she did not know how much Schwarzenegger was paid.
The move comes a week after the former Mr. Olympia relinquished his title as executive editor of Muscle & Fitness and Flex magazines, giving up at least $5 million in income.
Schwarzenegger gave up the title amid criticism for vetoing a bill regulating food supplements while taking money from magazines that profit from the industry.
The issue arose after the magazines' publisher, American Media Inc., filed a securities disclosure form that revealed the lucrative arrangement.
Schwarzenegger plans to keep writing columns for both magazines for free but has no plans to return the money he was paid before the controversy erupted earlier this month.
In a similar move, the governor plans to keep the previous fees he received from the Arnold Classic but refuse any in the future, Thompson said, although he is likely to continue attending the event in Columbus, Ohio.

yea, poor arnolds probly strapped for cash!!!!!![]()
its good, it keeps his financial "interets" away from governing the state. I wonder if he would of vetoed the bill if he wasn't making any money from the shows and magazine?
I wonder if the contest will still have his name attached to it now?

Even though I don't think his ties with bodybuilding have any impact on his political views I think it is the right thing to do. See my signature.

he earns money from magazines that promote supplements. if the supplements are regulated probably about 99% won't be able to make the claims that they make in the magazines. which will result in the magazines having a reduction of about 99% of their revenue, from the promotion of unregulated supplements.
so if the magazines cant make their money, they cant pass it on to him. therefore in his own financial interest he is going to veto the bill regarding regulation of food supplements.
thats what the systems all about, checks and balances. although its a little more complex than liberals vs republicans or whoever.Originally Posted by oaktownboy

It was a crap bill and should have been shot down anyways. People are always trying to regulate crap, and we hardly need more growth of the bureaucracy. Regulating food supplements... what a bunch of pansy assholes.
The supplement industry/drug industry is always trying to screw people over to increase their profits. Where was it now that its illegal to sell doses of vitamins and what not that are too high?
I'm glad that Arnold removed himself from seeming like he could be biased. That said, now that he has, I hope he fucks over the drug companies as much as possible in the time he has left. Then goes to their corporate offices and torches the girly men.
As another poster mentioned, there has been some legislation involving supps. and other things.Originally Posted by Pepper

I'm not saying the Canadian model is the best, but the American medical and pharmaceutical system is going to keep millions from ever being able to retire in their old age.
You can also look at the recent Malpractice insurance premiums that are causing some doctore - to actually switch careers - and not practice medicine anymore.

But alas, you probably went to a public school.
Arnold has not harmed the schools in any way, unless you consider limiting their increase in budgetary spending to 8% instead of 10%. The teachers unions are putting out these ads since they want the standard 'Base line budgeting" increase of 10%. In case you did not learn that in school, it means you automatically get an increase of 10% from the prior year.
Since we are having a revenue problem in California, we can not continue to increase spending at an unlimited rate.
If you only received a pay increase of 8% instead of 10% would you feel screwed ? The teachers unions want you to think so.
Remember the old sage wisdom. Follow the money trail.
The unions are complaining since they will not receive as much in union dues.
Who is going to send out advertisement to the contrary ? No one.
They have no monetary interest to do so.
A pay increase is good, but they always want more.

you know Joe Weider, the man that made sure that he has the biggest show.
made it so sure he had to take down the prizes of the S.O.S. (show of strenght)from $110.000 to $20.000, and that means no big names like Coleman, Cutler, Schlierkamp, Ruhl, Jackson(both of them), James, Priest and a lot more.
now a week ago this happened:
OLYMPIA BONANZA
America Media Inc. (AMI) and The International Federation of Bodybuilders (IFBB), promoters of the 2005 Olympia Weekend, are proud to announce that prize money for the this year's event has been increased from $540,000 to $661,000. That represents a staggering 22% increase of $121,000.
The purse for the Mr. Olympia contest has been raised by $101,000, Ms. Olympia by $10,000 and the Fitness and Figure events by $5,000 each. Comparisons to last year for each contest are shown in the attached charts. Another breakthrough is that all Mr. Olympia competitors will take home a check of at least $2,000. The prize money for men now stacks up to $500,000 — by far the richest purse in the sport.
The overall $121,000 increase makes good on the promoter's promise to take the sport to ever higher levels and to continue investing in the athletes.
Olympia Prize Money
--------------------------2005 2004
--------MR OLYMPIA $ 500,000 $ 399,000
---------MS OLYMPIA $ 71,000 $ 61,000
----FITNESS OLYMPIA $ 55,000 $ 50,000
-----FIGURE OLYMPIA $ 35,000 $ 30,000
--------------TOTAL $ 661,000 $ 540,000
HMMMMM I wonder were Arnold put his money now that he can not accept it him self.....
