Miami vs. Florida State game...I noticed something

I noticed the announcers referred to Florida State as the 'Noles instead of Seminoles (due to the whole NCAA mascot ordeal). I also noticed they called Miami the 'Canes instead of Hurricanes. I am wondering if anybody knows why? If it was simply shorthand way of saying it, or ABC was worried about the sensitivity of the Katrina disaster.

Those are common "shorthand"

I don't think it had anything to do with being PC.
