Admiral Nimitz, General Eisenhower, and J. Robert Oppenheimer (among many others in Truman's own cabinet) disagreed with Truman about dropping atomic bombs on the Japanese. Apparently the Japanese were trying to surrender to the US since May of '45 when the US destroyed much of Tokyo w/ B-29 bombers and that an atomic catastrophe was not warranted.

Definately. I think disgusting acts of war take place more so in 'non-global' conflicts, that is conflicts not involving one of the worlds superpowers. A good example of this is the Russo/Serb/Croat conflict in the 90's.
