I used to like the Kelly/Explorer style guitar. I prefer the Metal Zone pedal, which sounds pretty good through a tube amp. For power though, nothing touches a tube amp even though I can live with a solid state preamp without completely hating it.

Active pickups to me are a complete waste on a solid state amp.

used to play jacksons, ESP is always good shit, those LTD's are definately good value for the money, as long as the bridge isnt defective like my buddies (if you break a lot of high E's your bridge might be phucked).

metallica started me playing, so always gonna give props to them, even though megadeth blows their asses away

never really got into megadeth that much... basically the only song i know of is symphony of destruction lol. Everyone is either "i love metallica" or "metallica is a bunch of pussies, i love megadeth". Which is funny considering Dave Mustain started with metallica way back in the day as lead guitarist. And they both also have signature guitars with ESP. Go figure.

The only thing i dont like about that esp is look where the strap thingies are. The balance is horrible when youre trying to play standing up. Usually a guitar will just sit in the position you put it in but this one flops right over if you let it go. so you either gotta hold it with your fret hand or kinda hold your forarm over the top of the guitar with your strumming/picking hand. Kind of a nusance but its a great guitar, i love the thing. Good bang for the buck if nothing else... got it for $818 cdn new. This is the amp i got too if anyone cares .

if you want to see what time it is, get Megadeth: Rust in Peace. single greatest album ever for bad ass heavy metal. kirk hammet is a hack compared to marty friedman. when i was 17 (13 years ago) i could play any kirk hammet lead. i still have trouble with some of martys stuff.
after countdown to extinction megadeth did start making lamer albums i must admit, although i still liked their stuff.

mustaine was kicked out of metallica because he had a heroin habit and a bad attitude. mustaine is far superior to hetfield in terms of skill for playing and the shit he comes up with, but a lot of people dont like his singing voice.
metallica is a lot more commercial too, for the kids and chicks.

yeah i heard he got kicked out cuz he was too much of a "party animal". i guess thats what they meant then haha. I think hetfield has one of the most creative voices ever man. Hes one of my idols for sure. I think megadeths singer is too "death metal" for me. I agree with you that metallica is more commercial (they played enter sandman at a very popular night club i was at once, couldnt believe my ears) but im sure theyve almost doubled megadeths profits too...

Ill have to check that album out... Is megadeth hard to learn to play?

The same is true of metallica and the black album pretty much... Although some of load (actually load is still really good ), reload and even st. anger are quite good.

Rust in Peace, one of the best albumbs of all time. Master of Puppets, Ride and Kill were good but Rust is GENIUS.

Hammet I wouldn't say sucks, his writing is awesome, but his style is not super complex.

Yes Dave got kicked out, he almost ran them off the road driving with the band. He had a drug problem up through Peace Sells, Who's Buying. Then during Rust in Peace he only had a smoking problem, I believe. They were heroin heads, smuggling in drugs in shampoo bottles and you name it. Countdown was good but very very studio, Marty commented that Dave pushed his playing to a new level because Dave demanded computer like precision timing on all riffing/leads, the entire band had to be in synch making it sound almost as if it was created on a computer.

Alex Scholnick though was probably my favorite metal lead guitarist, now he does Jazz.

I'm damn shocked though a "metal guy" doesn't have Rust in Peace, you've been deprived of great artwork. The album flows from song to song perfectly, and its just mind baffling.

More technical for sure, Metallica is what I tell people they should start with when they dont know how to play guitar AT ALL. I started with Kill 'em All and it was great to learn with, then Ride the Lightning.

    Mudge,
If you like Metallica you should learn nothing else matters, I learned it it tab. That is if you really want to learn classic/ flamenco style. Metallica isn't the same, but its a good start.
Do you know any theory? thats really the key to differnt styles, like flamenco, no pentatonics, etc.

hammets early work is all based on pentatonics and the minor scale (harmonic sometimes). that is what makes it rather easy to play, he doesnt do a lot of advanced techniques at all, just plays fast (see: master of puppets solo, creeping death solo). cant say i know much beyond the black album because i was burnt out on them by then.

marty on the other hand has an insane command of the fretboard, playing all types of scales and modes and techniques that he made up himself. i really dont know how he got so god damned good, wish i did. when i used to try and analyze his music i would end up frustrated.

now if we are talking death metal, its time to bust out the old school obituary and cannibal corpse, and some six feet under

i also used to play lead for Decedent

Rust is one of those albums where Every song is good. even dawn patrol which is only drums and bass.

no offense ( i dont know your skill level) but i doubt you could play much off of Rust right now. first thing to do is listen to the album. even the rythms are crazy. take no prisoners starts off with one of the baddest riffs ever. poison was the cure will floor you. Holy Wars is pretty much the shit.

    just get the album

    and play it Loud
